Dressed: The History of Fashion podcast

We’re not going to point you in the direction of last-minute beauty purchases, today. We’re going to encourage you, instead, to sit down and listen to a fab podcast that we’ve discovered.

Beauty plays only a peripheral role in Dressed, which is hosted by Cassidy Zachary and April Calahan on iHeartRadio. They are a couple of incredibly knowledgeable American fashion historians who have now interviewed hundreds of guests on their Tuesday and Thursday podcasts, and they have been one of the most uplifting and distracting discoveries of 2020. (Because let’s face it, we all need our minds taking off ‘things’.)

It has reminded us how fashion is woven into social history. As they observe, ‘With over 7 billion people in the world, we all have one thing in common. Every day we get dressed.’ And Dressed, as they explain, explores ‘the social and cultural histories behind the who, what, when of why we wear.’

So: from Tudor costume to showgirl fripperies, the story of St. Catherine’s Day (when the seamstresses of Paris’s couture ateliers celebrate in style), through to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s choice of collar styles and the history of mending, it’s all there – and more, more, more, since the show debuted in 2015.

Whether you’re cooking up a storm or collapsing onto a sofa, out walking the dog or decorating the tree, it is honestly a fantastic listen. We couldn’t be more thrilled that there are still HUNDREDS of episodes left for us joyfully to discover.
