We know weβre ALL trying to save money right now, but reaching for last yearβs sunscreen is a fast track to skin damage. Its efficacy deteriorates over the winter, so stock up on a new supply of SPF15 (or preferably higher), and use liberally.
Weβve rolled back on doing so many Zoom calls, but the best piece of advice weβve learned is to avoid any kind of shiny make-up, which is just accentuated by the screen. Think matte, think powdered T-zone β and forget mineral make-up and light-reflective concealers, which just bounce back the light and make you look sweaty.
Weβve been checking out Trinny Woodallβs one-minute eyelid lift β and now we swear by it just as she does. βTake two fingers and place them on the middle of each eyebrow. Push your fingers up towards your forehead, applying hard pressure. Now try to close your eyes. Open and close them 30 times in quick succession.β
Love this, from fashion designer and fragrance mogul Narciso Rodriguez: βEverybody has a ritual with their fragrance; some people throw it on their clothes and run out of the door, but for me itβs more elaborate. I like to spray the shower with eucalyptus oil. One shot wakes you up in the morning, while a shot of lavender in an evening shower is deeply relaxing.β
Many of us are changing our clothes when we come in from outdoors, as part of protecting ourselves against Covid-19. But itβs also a good idea to clean your hairbrushes regularly, either with a daily spray cleanser or a brush shampoo (or your usually shampoo), which will not only remove debris and build-up but also microorganisms. You might want to keep brushes covered, when not in use β and donβt share with other household members.
If you have ridges on your nails, these are often the result of an injury to the cuticle or nail bed. To remove, use a buffer β but only lightly, being careful not to take off too much of the surface of the nail.
Brows getting you down? Don't be tempted to have a blitz. When tweezing at home, take out a few hairs and walk away. Talk on the phone or even mop the floor (weβre doing a lot of THAT!), then do a few more. Aim for a soft, fluid curve with no sharp angles.
We've heard reports of people buying secondhand make-up on eBay. Just one word of advice? Donβt do it. βGently-usedβ cosmetics (as theyβre sometimes described are never a good idea β but even less so, now.
A less fattening alternative to the banana bread trend: make a ripe banana into a hair mask, instead. Mix with a tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of sweet almond oil (at a pinch, pretty much any oil will do), then apply the mixture after hair is shampooed. Leave for 15-30 minutes, or even longer, than shampoo again and condition as usual.
Wisdom on hair health from Anabel Kingsley: βJuice fasting is awful for your hair. You can guarantee six to 12 weeks after a juice cleanse, youβll experience hair loss.β What we should all be doing is taking a vitamin D supplement, βto promote hair growth. Every hair follicle has a vitamin D receptor, which influences the hair-growth cycle. Low vitamin D is linked to alopecia, so taking a supplement is an easy way to help with hair loss.β
Weβre not even considering a full make-up look each day, but a light touch makes us feel groomed and pulled-together. Weβve always liked the clutter-free advice from Trish McEvoy, which is βAll of us one or two products that we canβt go without. For some itβs foundation, for others itβs eyeliners. You donβt need to have hundreds of eyeshadows or lipsticks; just the few products or shades that work for you.β
We agree wholeheartedly with Votary founder Arabella Prestonβs philosophy about ageing. βI try not to obsess about physical changes. After all, as a make-up artist, I never looked at someone elseβs flaws β Iβm drawn to their individual beautyβ¦ If we could all see ourselves more objectively in the mirror, rather than listening to our inner critic, weβd probably feel better about ageing.β
Tempted by a home pedicure? Remember: you canβt hop into bed, shoes or clothes for at least two hours after painting your toenails.
If youβre a novice at home hair removal, opt for sugaring kits over home waxing kits, explains Shimol Kanuga, waxing expert and founder of Shoreditchβs Guys and Dolls Parlour. ββTheyβre applied to skin at room temperature. And unlike traditional waxing kits, theyβre also mess-free.β
Working at home inside, during lockdown? This can interfere with sleep, so advice from Guy Leschziner, consultant neurologist at the Sleep Disorder Centre at Guyβs and St. Thomasβs Hospital in London is to work near a window. βEnvironmental light, even if it is overcast, is beneficial for us to recognise that it is daytime, which makes it easier for us to associate night with sleep and to regain our circadian rhythm.β
If youβve been running or jogging for your daily exercise, be aware that sweat and friction from sports fabrics can strip fake tan off the body, says tanning expert James Harkness. βSprinkling any form of powder in your sports bra and around your joints β such as inner arms β will shield the tan from heat and sweat, protecting it during your workout,β he advises.
There are commercial coffee ground scrubs available, but have you ever considered making your own? Add a slosh of warmed coconut oil to a handful of coffee grounds for a great instant body buffer. (But do it in the shower to avoid the βgritty bottomβ effect.)
Handy household hint (um, since weβre all at home at the mo): if a drawer is sticking, remove it and rub a candle on the runners. The drawer should open more smoothly when you slip it back I to place. (NB This counts as a de-stressing tip.)
Home waxing right now? Some waxes are pulled off with muslin strips, but if your kit contains large strips, cut them into Band Aid-sized piece, since itβs easier to wax one small area at a time. Test the temperature on the inside of your wrist, meanwhile; if the wax is too hot wait just a minute or so because if you wait too long, it will congeal.
Suffering from dry hands? If thereβs anyone who isnβt, theyβre not washing their hands properly. Or enough. But itβs possible to reverse the cracing, dryness and soreness, according to Dr. Ifeoma Ejikeme, founder of the Adonia Medical Centre in London Best way to moisturise? Generously apply cream to both the front and back of clean hands, paying attention to moisturising between the fingers β itβs the area most likely to suffer.
