Beauty Bible Weekend Steal: Aveeno's calming new skincare innovations

Aveeno – longstanding hit with the sensitive-skinned Beauty Bible team – has long made a virtue of gentle, barrier-conscious formulas. The whole (supremely affordable) range harnesses the power of oats, which are notoriously soothing and calming. We recently tried this head-to-toe routine designed for skin that becomes dry, tight, reactive or simply needs a little more kindness – and could almost hear the sign of relief from our face/body.

There’s a new fragrance for this range – cosy, cocooning, blended with coconut, cocoa butter and vanilla (a light dose, nothing overwhelming) – just perfect for this slightly more snuggle-up season, we think, upping the pleasure factor of using a range which has always been brilliantly functional.

Aveeno Daily Moisturising Body Wash Coco Vanilla – we’ll start with this, a creamy, soap-free cleanser that leaves skin fresh, not squeaky or stripped. Hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested and formulated for sensitive skin – and the same applies for everything featured here.

Daily Moisturising Lotion Cocoa Vanilla is a product known and loved by many: a fast-absorbing everyday hydrator combining finely milled colloidal oatmeal with rich emollients. It works to replenish the barrier, comfort dry skin and keep limbs soft and smooth, without the sticky aftermath!. The brand says it moisturises for 24 hours – not sure about that, but by bedtime, skin’s still pleasantly soft and nourished.

New to the Daily Moisturising family is Comforting Body Oil Spray Cocoa Vanilla – a real one-and-done post-shower find. With a fine spray format, it is just brilliantly practical for arms, legs and hard-to-reach bits – and don’t worry: the cocoa-vanilla scent adds a warm, cosy note, rather than overwhelms. NB Probably best for dry skin that tolerates fragrance; anyone in the throes of sensitivity, eczema or a flare-up may prefer to stick to the fragrance-free lotion, above. Annoyingly, at time of press, this is out of stock everywhere we looked (doh!) – but honestly, put it on your shopping list for the future. (It may well be in bricks and mortar Aveeno stockists.)

Calm+Restore Oat Rich Cream is also new – designed for dry to very dry sensitive skin. And gosh, this is good: a rich-but-lightweight moisturiser (rich enough for our dry skins, certainly) relies on oat beta-glucan to draw in moisture, boosting natural hyaluronic acid levels and helping skin hold on to hydration. A lovely, cushion-y cream – and oh, a very decent price, for this quality, at £14.99 for 50ml.

We’ve been wanting to try Cleansing Cuffs – but keep forgetting. And they’re a little bit life-changing for anyone who washes their face; you slip these soft wristbands on before washing your face to stop water running down your arms and soaking your sleeves – an unexpectedly civilised addition cleansing rituals! Alas, these are hard to find on sale individually, but they do form part of the Aveeno Calm+Restore Face Starter Kit – available here for £24.95 – which features some other finds from this gentle-on-skin range, alongside the Oat Rich Cream we report on above. (Can’t attest to the performance of the other products in that kit – but suffice to say that as a couple of touchy-complexioned beauty eds, we generally rate everything from the brand.
