Virtual help for hair woes (with thanks to Paul Edmonds)

Roots! They’re the bane of lockdown life for all of us who colour our mops. Whether they’re grey (or as colourists tend to call them ‘white hairs’), or grow outs, we want them covered up please and thank you. Except that’s a bit tricky if you usually depend on in salon upkeep (yes, hands up – we do).

But salvation is whizzing its way down to Sarah in remote west Dorset in the shape of a specially formulated Colour Kit and Glaze Kit from the wonderful Paul Edmonds. (Whose Knightsbridge salon is right at the top of her list to book in when this lockdown finally lifts…)

Let’s be clear that techniques like highlights, lowlights and balliage are precision procedures, which are best left to the professionals. But – oh joy! – you absolutely can touch up your roots with these kits from Paul Edmonds because you don't need to be so precise. First, however, comes a consultation with one of the expert colourists to examine said roots and advise on what to do.

The great news is that you don’t need to be an existing client at Paul Edmonds to book in for a consultation. For a £20 booking fee, redeemable if you order a kit – they’re each £40 - you can get the benefit of personal advice from a leading colour expert. The kits come in three different shades so it’s important to discover what’s best for you.

Though scrutinising grey hair may not be your idea of fun, Sarah found that chatting with colourist Joe Savine via Zoom was strangely comforting. As he said, his clients all just want to look nicer and brighter when they catch sight of themselves in the mirror.

Joe prescribed a light blonde Colour Kit for Sarah’s hairline, which will lighten her face and also deposit colour on the grey hairs so they blend in. That will take about 20 minutes. After one shampoo and towel drying her hair, the next stage is to apply the Glaze, which will take about 10 to 20 minutes. Rather than growing out harshly, the effects will fade over a couple of months.

The kits contain everything you need productwise plus gloves, a cape and an application brush. There are videos online to show you the process and, as Joe says, ‘there is always someone to hold your hand if you need it; you just have to email or phone’.
