Fab Find of the Week: Connock England Verdant collection
There aren’t many scents we come across that you’d feel happy wearing both on your skin, and to scent your surroundings with – but Connock England Verdant is really rather special.
Created by Amanda Connock, who founded her British fragrance and beauty collection in 2010, with a fragrance called Kukui: warm, exotic, built around gardenia, with notes of Italian bergamot, jasmine, sandalwood… It was followed by Kukui Noir (a more intense, evening version) – but the just-launched Verdant collection brings it all back home to the English countryside, where Connock England is based.
Green, fresh – all cut grass, hedgerows and summer sunshine, bottled – it’s just the scent for right this (overheated) minute. In the top and heart you’ll find a gust of super-green galbanum, blackcurrant, lemon, fig and eucalyptus, with classic English blooms – rose, geranium, lavender and carnation – brightened by peppermint, in the heart. But there’s a complexity to Verdant, too, via its base notes of sandalwood and amber, which linger smoochily on the skin.
As a home scent, it’s ultra-refreshing and outdoorsy – literally a breath of fresh air. On skin, it’s something else altogether – still ‘verdant’ (as the name implies), but with layers of intrigue. And it morphs on different skins to smell really quite different: Jo was with a colleague, the other day, and commented: ‘Gosh, you smell lovely.’ It was Connock England Verdant. Which happened to be what Jo herself was wearing – but it smelled really mysterious and intriguing, rather than green and fresh, on her friend’s skin.
There are all sorts of layering opportunities with this, too – body products (great for ‘tethering’ scent, as we explained in Jo’s Scent Notes last week, here), a hair duo, as well as an eau de parfum and those home fragrances. For home, there’s a candle (with a so-pretty design by interior designer Laura Stephens), a room spray and a diffuser – whichever is your preference. You can literally enjoy this fragrance in ‘scent-surround.’
Even better, for us, is the fact that you can try Verdant by buying the 10ml size, rather than springing for a full-size bottle.
It’s a breath of fresh air in itself, frankly, when perfume houses do that…
