Fab Find of the Week: The Seasonist

While we understand the idea of having a ‘signature’ scent that your loved ones recognise you by, we’re a bit more fickle around these parts. Certain fragrances spell summer – they come out when the opaque tights go away. Others are warming, cosy, cocooning – and would feel like wearing a velvet coat, to us, if worn in summer.

The Seasonist, which launched recently, taps into that in the most wonderful way: a quartet of fragrance collections which capture the brightness of spring, summer’s energy, autumn’s season-of-mist-and-mellow-fruitfulness and winter’s still calm. The founder, Katy Simpson, certainly knows her scents: she previously created Noble Isle – and it’s the fragrances, here, which really captured our attention, here.

They’re all gorgeous, but two skin scents stand out for us, starting with the wonderfully grounding Snowdust on Cedars, which imagines trees becoming ‘frosted chandeliers, as nature conjures magic.’ It blends cedarwood with juniper, frankincense and musk, and invigorating notes of mint and eucalyptus and is honestly so accomplished.

Next spring, meanwhile, we’re already looking forward to reaching for Daffodil Dew, which combines fresh narcissus and lily of the valley with powdery violet in a truly cheery combination. (Whisper it softly, but there are serious echoes of DIOR Diorissimo, here!)

We’re enjoying the cosiness of In Copper Woods as a candle – amber, leather, cinnamon, vetiver and sweet tonka, infused with a fresh note of tea – while our intro to the textures of the body care came via the Sky Blazes Blue Hand & Body Lotion. Verdict: silky, sinks in well, leaves skin super-smooth and fragrant. (Note: well-moisturised skin will make any fragrance last longer, so there are real virtues to layering.)

The line-up itself spans eau de parfums, bath and shower gels (£25), hand washes, multi-tasking hand-and-body lotions, plus dedicated body lotions and hand lotions in selected collections, and body oils, too (you’ll have to take a mooch around to see what’s available in which fragrance).

The formulations themselves, meanwhile – which are made in Somerset by a family-run company – are mostly naturally-derived and all-vegan-friendly, while the packaging incorporates Prevented Ocean Plastic, recyclable glass and FSC-certified paper. As for the candles? They’re made from soya wax, which also has the bonus of burning evenly. There are honestly so many plus-points for this range.

In what has become an increasingly digital world, in which so many of us spend entire days staring at screens, we are conscious of needing personally to reconnect with our senses and the seasons, almost as a counterpoint. This is a clever idea, beautifully executed, which can play a really important part in that reconnection, reminding us of the importance of paying attention to nature’s cycle for our wellbeing.
