Go through those coat pockets. Rattle your piggy bank. Ferret around down the back of the sofa for one of these, from our old friend Poppy King’s Lipstick Queen make-up brand. Because we think January definitely calls for a cheering make-up splurge – and we know just where to start.

Which you choose depends on whether you’re in Team Sheen or Team Matte, lip-wise. Whichever, we’ve found something fab from Lipstick Queen for you.

For lovers of a sheen-y lip, we have Rear View Mirror: a swivel-up, narrow-bulleted stick of colour that is a dream to apply. (Could probably do it without a mirror at all, at a push.) Why the name? Technically, this is designed to echo the reflective paint job on a shiny new car – although on our lips, it stops short of that real mirror finish. It’s fantastically comfortable – so moisturising, it’s more like a balm. There are a couple of neutral shades, but most add a great pop of colour to the lips (we were sent Joy Ride Java, a subtly pearlised of brown-y pink, but we’re going straight out to buy Berry Tacoma. And there’s a stunning red, Little Red Convertible.)

The other product is a fascinatingly mousse-y textured lipcolour by the name of (yes) Lipdulgence Lip Mousse. It’s as velvety as the other one is shiny – polar opposites, finish-wise, yet equally comfortable. You literally don’t feel it’s there, yet it’s creamy and soothing, delivering a real line-blurring effect. (It does have a hint of sweet vanilla scent to it – which may or not be your thing.)

Can’t rustle up enough change for either? It’s only five days till payday.
