Beauty Bible Loves... Mary Greenwell on Desert Island Discs

We love Desert Island Discs, and we love Mary Greenwell. Back in the day, with hairstylist Sam McKnight, long before that duo became almost as famous as the supermodels they worked with, Sam and Mary were Jo’s ‘dream team’ when Jo edited Honey magazine, dispatched on foreign shoots, safe in the knowledge that every model would look fah-bu-lous.

We’ve adored her ever since (and absolutely treasure the memories of occasionally having had her do our make-up). But we adore this fabulous make-up artist even more, having listened to Sunday’s ‘Desert Island Discs’, in which Mary shared with Lauren Laverne stories from a truly fascinating life, brought to life (as ever) by the music she chooses – which ranges from Tallulah Rendall (do check out her music – we’re fans, too) through to David Bowie (whose face Mary’s brushes have whisked across), via the historic moment when she and Sam were waiting in a studio for a ‘mystery’ client, and in walked the Princess of Wales… And the rest really is history, because Sam and Mary were responsible for her daring new image, and were part of Diana’s trusted team, till the princess’s tragic death.

It's not often that a figure from the beauty world gets the chance to choose their eight tracks and luxury (in Mary’s case a bed, which we totally identify with – see PS!). We loved listening – and we really think you’re going to, too…

PS Our own Jo Fairley was also Lauren’s castaway, back in August 2019 – if you haven’t listened, you can find it here. (And her luxury was her pillow!)
