COLOR WOW RAISE THE ROOT Thicken and Lift Spray, £19 for 150ml

This is a small work of hair-raising genius. Sarah’s found that over lockdown, her mane of thick, coloured hair has grown … and grown… now well down past her collarbone. Not a problem except that it’s now so heavy the crown looks as flat as Table Mountain.

Color Wow Raise The Root claims to get volume in fine/flat hair, which we’re pretty sure it would. But, as Sarah has discovered, it’s also brilliant for giving long thick hair a real lift and oomph that lasts ‘til the next shampoo.

Importantly, these good things happen without any stiff, sticky or brittle build-up (which has been noted with some other products…). Hair feels soft and silky, which – since we spend time and money conditioning our tresses – is as it should be but sometimes isn’t.

Also - not at all surprisingly from this colour-focused brand but worth pointing out - Raise the Root does not alter colour in any way, like yellowing or darkening; they say they have banned over 60 ingredients commonly found in other hair care formulas that can darken or distort colour.

Sarah sprays it on towel-dried hair before blow-drying with her head upside down and styling with a hot brush, which works a treat. There’s a short video you can link to from the website or directly on youtube here, with John Frieda stylist Giles (one of our old and dear friends from many years back) showing you how to apply.

Color Wow says you can also use Raise The Root on dry hair (what they call flat Day 2 hair) to give it an instant boost.

As we said, genius.
