Never layer active products like retinol and AHAs such as glycolic acid โ€“ itโ€™s a recipe for a reaction, because they both have an exfoliating action and can lead to soreness and excessive peeling.

We all know about the benefits of lavender oil when it comes to calming and sleep โ€“ but bergamot can have the same effect. Add a few drops to a bath or use in a diffuser near the bed.

When applying under-eye concealer, make-up artist Sarah Jossel recommends going one shade lighter than your foundation, to brighten the eye area. To conceal imperfections anywhere else on the face, match the shade to your foundation.

Did you know that listening to music for an hour each day can help reduce fatigue? Mental and physical energy get a boost when you listen to an upbeat track you canโ€™t sit still to.

Tip of the Day: 11.07.2017

You are applying sunscreen to the backs of your hands, arenโ€™t youโ€ฆ? Regularly exposed โ€“ even in the car โ€“ they're one of the first places to suffer from wrinkles and sun spots.

We love this from Linda Wells, formerly editor of American beauty magazine Allure. 'The only thing worse than aeroplane lasagne is aeroplane air. The humidity level on a plane is lower than that in the desert (15% -v- 35%). That's brutal to skin. After take off, spray or splash your face and follow with face cream and a lip balm. If you're sitting in a window seat, choose a cream with SPF15 or higher โ€“ UV light penetrates glass and is intense at high altitudes. Reapply either hourly, or whenever your face feels dry.'

An oft-overlooked spot for applying sunscreen is the back of the ears and the side of the neck. Hair offers little protection, especially when you wear it pulled back. Remember to smooth sunscreen on the rims and backs of ears โ€“ and be sure toย smooth sunscreen from the nape of the neck all the way round to the throat.

Another great lipstick tip from our Lipstick Queen friend Poppy King. When you're shopping for lipstick, 'Don't buy it immediately,' she advises. 'I always suggest wearing a new shade around a bit to do your shopping and just get used to it. I know it sounds weird, but look at yourself the reflection in shop mirrors, get comfortable before you decide whether it suits you or not.'

Body oil is gorgeous on summer skin but can feel claggy. Make-up pro Troy Surratt prefers to add a few drops to bathwater, soak and then towel off. 'It's a great way to avoid too much slip on the skin with just the right amount of moisturising benefits,' he believes.

Make-up artist Jillian Dempsey likes to use a round velour puff โ€“ the type used for face powder โ€“ for applying self-tanner. Pump the product onto the puff, then swirl over skin in circular motions. 'Run the puffer the elbows and knees lightly and quickly so they don't get too dark,' she advises.

Tip of the Day: 26.06.2017

When you exercise, remove sweaty clothes immediately. Blemishes on the back, shoulders and neck โ€“ a condition calledย acneย mechanica ย โ€“ can erupt when hot, perspiration-soaked skin is rubbed or chafed by material.

Tip of the Day: 20.06.2017

People often stop at the hairline when applying facial sunscreen. To avoid redness, go half an inch into your hair. Also apply sunscreen directly to the scalp along the parting. If you have thinning hair, cover the entire scalp with an SPF spray.

Tip of the Day: 19.06.2017

Hairdresser Andrew Collinge advises anyone with hair that's prone to greasiness to avoid rubbing the scalp during washing. 'Instead pick up sections of hair in your palm and massage in your shampoo โ€“ this helps to control overactive sebaceous glands.'

Tip of the Day: 14.06.2017

If you're a keen tennis player, choose your sunscreen carefully. Gel sunscreens are absorbed quickly, which is not only a plus if you're in a hurry โ€“ they don't leave a sticky or greasy residue, which is handy if you're wielding a racket.

Tip of the Day: 12.06.2017

Love this advice for when you're shopping for a new lipstick, from Lipstick Queen Poppy King: 'Check yourself in a full-length mirror. A lot of women will put on a new shade, look in a small mirror and go: "That doesn't suit me." Consider the effect it has on your whole outfit and persona, not just on your face.

Tip of the Day: 09.06.2017

We all know about the pulse-points on the wrists and the neck โ€“ where blood vessels are close to the surface โ€“ but amongย the lesser-known pulse-points are the tops of the feet. In bed on a hot night, kick off the covers to expose them โ€“ or if you come in from outside, sit on the edge of the bath and run cold water over them. You'll cool amazingly fast.

Tip of the Day: 08.06.2017

Doing your own manicure or pedicure can save a small fortune and is great if you're nimble โ€“ ย but a thick layer of polish dries slowly, smudges easily and peels more quickly. Wipe the brush on the side of the bottle twice, and paint the nail with two thin coats (on top of base coat and under topcoat, naturally).

Tip of the Day: 07.06.2017

If you have a fringe, sometimes all it takes to sharpen up a haircut is to have this trimmed. Ask your stylist to trim your fringe rather than an all-over tidy-up, and just five minutes can buy you an extra month between cuts.
