We have three sets of Bare Biology face, body & mind supplements to give away, each set worth £101.50

Just suppose there was a supplement that helped your skin look supple and peachy, hair and nails grow longer and stronger and at the same time helped your brain and your heart? Oh and your mood. Yup, you got it. We’re talking about omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs).

Way back in evolution, as human brains were forming, our ancestors were eating oily/fatty fish. Now, millennia later, about 60% of our brains is made of fat and around half of that is the omega-3 kind. So ‘Essential’ means exactly that. We need Omega-3s to fuel our brain.

Skinwise, they help seal in moisture and reduce inflammation so not only can they improve the look and feel of skin but they also help alleviate dry, itchy, red skin, and conditions like acne, eczema and even psoriasis.

And omega-3 EFAs can certainly have a profound effect on mood, as mum of three Melanie Lawson, who founded Bare Biology, discovered when she suffered post natal depression and all-consuming anxiety following the births of her second and third children. ‘Once I started to significantly increase my omega-3 intake through eating sardines and taking a supplement, I started to feel better. It was a lifesaver,’ she says.

Thing is, our bodies can’t make this vital nutrient so we have to consume it regularly. The main source is still oily fish, which contains two of the three main fatty acids; the third is found in plants (eg flaxseed, walnuts and dark green vegetables). While it’s obviously important to eat well, it’s often difficult to get enough omega-3 in your diet. And that’s where good supplements come in.

We’ve been convinced of the benefits of supplementing with omega-3 EFAs since Sarah wrote one of the very first features for The Daily Telegraph over 35 years ago, when there was early research on the benefits. Brands sprang up like mushrooms. So why did Melanie embark on the huge undertaking of starting up her own brand in 2012? ‘I really struggled to find any brands in the UK that met all my criteria: certified purity, no fishy taste, sustainably sourced from wild and small oily fish, and in the natural triglyceride form that’s much easier to absorb,’ she explains. (A Bare Biology omega-3 supplement is the one Sarah takes daily.)

Since then, Melanie’s business has taken off and expanded. One of her adds is Skinful Pure Marine Collagen Powder, another multi-tasking nutrient that helps support skin, nails and hair as well as muscles (remember the heart is a muscle…) and bones. Plus there are specific supplements for pregnancy and for children, all on the website barebiology.com together with some pretty tempting recipes – you can put the omega-3 oil and the collagen into various dishes from red pepper hummus to a strawberry cheesecake smoothie (really!).
