Get your (re)fill at Neal's Yard Remedies

What goes around comes around. And we’re sure the wonderful Neal’s Yard Remedies won’t mind us recollecting that it was another pioneering natural beauty brand – our friend Anita Roddick’s The Body Shop – which used to invite customers to bring back their empties for refills, back in the 1970s.

But the idea didn’t ‘stick’, back then. There were Health & Safety issues, and as society became more and more consumerist, refills didn’t quite chime with the times.

How happy we are, then, to see this. Because finally (and we write this as authors of The Green Beauty Bible!), the world’s waking up to the pressing problems we face. Reusing, refilling, recycling and generally cutting down on what we buy is taking a grip.

OK, so NYR is starting with just two much-loved products – Geranium & Orange Hand Wash, and Bee Lovely Bath & Shower Gel. But it IS a start. The deal is: you clean your empties thoroughly, leaving the labels on, and return to participating stores to get a £2 discount on the refilled product.

Those stores are:

• Gillingham, Dorset

• Covent Garden

• Marylebone

• Oxford

• Bristol

• Salisbury

• Manchester

• Glasgow

• St. Pancras (coming soon)

It’s just one of many of NYR’s packaging initiatives, actually, that you can read about on their website here. (Can’t help Anita must be up there somewhere smiling about this initiative. Because we certainly are…)
