Hole & Corner new candles

We have been huge fans of Hole & Corner magazine since its debut issue (in which Joโ€™s husband Craig Sams featured, actually): a beautifully-produced magazine which celebrates artisan craftsmanship and a slower, more considered pace of life.

Thatโ€™s a spirit embodied by this new hand-made candle collection, created in partnership with True Grace (whose home fragrances we also adore: Joโ€™s house smells hippie-ishly patchouli-ish at all times, thanks to their Albany Patchouli room spray). Both Hole & Corner and True Grace are based in the West Country, and thereโ€™s a very British vibe to these creations.

Four altogether, all with a 40-hour burn, each created โ€˜to evoke the memory of a particular favourite โ€œhole and cornerโ€ โ€“ a secret place in a life lived away from the mainstream.โ€™

Saltmarsh โ€“ with fresh notes of geranium, neroli, amber and moss. Think โ€˜salty sea air, southery breeze, seagulls, canvas and thread, tangled seaweed in the sun.โ€™ (We canโ€™t resist using their descriptions for the candles, as theyโ€™re just so evocative.)

Leather Shop โ€“ bergamot, ginger, sandalwood, oudh, coriander, patchouli, musk and cedar, conjuring up โ€˜Leather, polish, elbow greaseโ€™.

Smokehouse โ€“ this conjures up โ€˜Fishermenโ€™s huts, smouldering wood fires, the daily catch, coastal windsโ€™. Smoke notes, cade oil, fir balsam, birch, moss and woods feature.

Allotment โ€“ probably the one weโ€™re most enraptured by, with its complex blend of nutmeg, bergamot, lemon, black pepper, cardamom and basil, jasmine, patchouli, oregano, clove and cypress, underpinned by amber and cedarwood.

You canโ€™t hold a candle to them, frankly.
