Fab Find of the Week: Stila x Hunger Games

There’s a time for barely-there make-up. (Most days, for us – ‘like you, but prettier,’ as Bobbi Brown always used to say to us.) But we acknowledge that there can be a time for a little cinematic drama.

So, Stila’s new collaboration with ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ offers both, with character-inspired colours, shimmering textures – but so importantly, enough wearable options to tempt even those who couldn’t tell their tributes from their Quarter Quells. (Er, that’s definitely us. We had to ask younger members of the family to fill us in on all of this, but we are rather taken with the collection – and its packaging – so it had to be done.)

Stila is the film’s official make-up partner, hence this collaboration comes with genuine backstage credentials, launching in advance of the movie itself (which comes out on 20th November).

The collection divides into three moods, alongside two eye sets. Happily, you don’t need to embrace full Hunger Games drama: a softly illuminated cheek or beautifully smudged liner will do nicely (as it will for us). Here are our picks from this Stila limited edition beauty menu, ranging from subtly flattering to decidedly attention-seeking.

Sunrise Eyes – this five-piece set of travel-sized Liqua-Play liquid eyeshadows takes inspiration from the film characters Maysilee, Lenore Dove, Proserpina, Effie and Mags. Three silky mattes meet one shimmer and one glitter finish, formualted to blend, build and set without creasing. A dressing-up box for grown-up eyelids, for sure – and while we’ll pass on the pink and blue, thanks, the bronze and nude shades are super-wearable.

All Fire – definitely on the wearable side, inspired, we are reliably informed, ‘by Haymitch and Lenore Dove’s love story’, this duo teams a shimmering bronze Liqua-Play eyeshadow with Stay All Day Kajal Waterproof Gel Eye Liner Pencil in Black Smolder. (These really are budge-proof, NB.) Blend the creamy black pencil before it sets for a smoky, rather than sharply graphic, finish. Gorgeous tin! (We love a tin.)

Heaven’s Hue Highlighter in Rosy Dream offers a beautiful, soft-focus rosy radiance. And be aware, while Heaven’s Dew Honey Glow Balm in Golden Sun looks vivid orange-red in thet tube, it delivers a sheer wash of perkifying colour.

There are bolder shades (blue eyeliner, anyone?), as you’ll see from the visual – but our mission is always to fillet out the most universally flattering products, which could work at any age. (From movie fan teen to her grandma…)

Our takeaway? Well, you can definitely enjoy the fantasy without looking as though you’re attending a fancy-dress première. (Or earn Brownie points for gifting something from the collection to a Hunger Games superfan.)

To be honest, all this kinda makes us want to see the film! (Which may be the wrong way round, but who cares…?)
