BECO Soaps and Hand Washes

BECO.jpg

We love everything about BECO. (It stands for ‘Better Corporation.’)

We love their natural hand washes. We love their soaps (find them in Waitrose and Sainsburys as well as online), in Red Berries, Honey Blossom or Wild Meadow scents.

And we especially love their ethos.

Jo has visited the BECO factory in the East End, where 80% of the workforce is visually impaired, disabled or otherwise disadvantaged. (Though as they put it, while 80% may be disabled, 100% are brilliant.) It’s probably the most heart-warming factory you’ll ever step inside (and not just because of the waggy-tailed guide dogs on the premises).

We love, love, love the fact that on their packaging, BECO trumpet the name of the person who created that product for you – together with their photo.

Most of all we love their campaign called #STEALOURSTAFF, which is seeking to encourage employers to consider – literally – stealing BECO’s team members. What’s the deal with that? Well, BECO believe that their staff have values and the skillset to work outside the company, making room for other people to train and join the team.

As Camilla Marcus-Dew, the very visionary Head of Sustainable Growth at BECO’s parent company, CLARITY & Co., observes: We want to give people who want to work, the opportunity to work. It’s as simple as that. Some of our staff have been at the organisation for more than 30 years, and as much as we love our team and their loyalty, we want to help them and others have opportunities and so that as a society we can close the disability unemployment gap. We need people to start acting and living their values, not just talking about it.’

And if you can’t help by creating a role for a disabled person? At least when you choose BECO you’ll be showing that you’re not washing your hands of the situation.
