Beauty Clinic: Winter sunglasses S.O.S.

Q. I’m looking for inexpensive sunglasses to shield my eyes from winter sun and urban pollution. All the high street stores say they won’t have any stock until spring (no date given). Any ideas?

A. We had the same problem. By this time of year, our existing sunnies have lost an arm or just got lost. We trailed round the usual suspects (Boots and Superdrug) with no joy. As you say, the common response was that they wouldn't have any new ones in until Spring. Which is weird considering that lots of people go off to the sun or skiing at this time of year.

Anyway, Sarah was dashing up the Strand in London when she spotted a Boots Opticians and thought she would ask if they knew anywhere. Well, Abracadabra!! The very helpful staff pointed out that all their prescription sunglasses frames were available with plain dark glass, for prices starting at £10.

There is an excellent selection and she bought two for the very reasonable price of £25, together with proper rigid cases (unlike the usual floppy ones you’re offered if you’re lucky).

Three cheers for Boots Opticians! Visit boots.com/Opticians and click on Find a Store Near Me. Probably worth a phone call to make sure they have a stock. A selection at different prices also appear to be available online at boots.com if you Search for ‘ladies sunglasses’.

Finally, it’s worth pointing out that none of the staff at Boots in Hammersmith, west London, appeared to know anything about these options…
