Beauty Clinic: Filling in scanty brows

Q. I have very sparse eyebrows, due to over-plucking in my youth, and wonder what the best brow product is to fill them in and give colour and shape? I haven’t got the courage to have them tattooed.  A We sympathise! There are many women who have ended up with the same scenario or have lost brows (and lashes) due to cancer treatment. The good news is that there are some great products on the market that make brows look as good as the originals.

For a simple brow pencil we suggest Studio 10 Brow Lift Perfecting Liner/£22, which founder Grace Fodor developed for Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), the beauty industry’s make-up charity for cancer patients. This creamy-textured, double-ended pencil has an ash-tone one end paired with a skin-coloured highlighter the other. Grace promises the brow end colour corrects to your own shade, depending on how hard you press. We’re not sure how it works but it does. With every product sold, Studio 10 donate one to LGFB. (Sarah uses this on a daily basis, to define and fill in the spaces where a gas oven exploded in her face many years ago…)

Moving on to a more sophisticated approach, we also love Benefit’s multi-award winning Gimme Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel/£20 in three shades, which has teeny microfibers that adhere to skin and existing hairs. Jo abandoned every other brow product after trying this.

We’re looking forward to trialling the just-launched WunderBrow 1-step Brow Gel by new brand-on-the-beauty-block Wunder2.  As well as a blend of colour pigments, WunderBrow has hairlike fibres that cling to skin to create natural-looking brows. The USP of this product - which you paint on, leave a moment then brush into shape – is that it lasts up to three days, thanks to something called Permafix Technology.  In five shades, blonde, auburn, brunette, black/brown and jet black, all vegan and cruelty-free, WunderBrow claims to be budge-proof, transfer-proof and waterproof, and has already won a couple of awards.
