With food shopping opportunities seriously curtailed and summer fruit season still a distant prospect, we were feeling a bit deficient in berries – the superfruits that help everything from skin and eyes to your brain and body, in part by fighting inflammation.

Deep violet Haskap berries are the superfruit powerhouse (from the honeysuckle family for botanically minded readers) that contain at least three times more antioxidants than blueberries. Based in Nova Scotia, the company Haskapa was the brainchild of husband and wife team Simon and Evie Kemp: Simon’s a green entrepreneur, and Evie is a medical doctor who’s passionate about promoting holistic health.

Haskap berries are positively pullulating with anthocyanins, a sub group of antioxidants, which give some fruit and vegetables their deep purple, pink, blue and red colours.

We pop a spoonful of the pretty purple powder on yogurt, in smoothies, on muesli, porridge – or you can add to fruit juice or herbal teas, they suggest; we haven’t tried those last as currently prefer the yogurt/muesli option but open to ideas!

Haskap Berry Powder comes in 100g pouches containing about 800 haskap berries (who’s counting…?) – and that’s a month’s worth of servings. So for now, 50p a day, which is pretty fab we reckon.
