Beauty Clinic: How can I cover up grey roots?
Q. I have heard about a good new root re-touch product for my grey hair, which is coloured its original dark brown. Can you tell me the name and what it does, please? A. Yes indeed, we can! It is called Color Wow Root Cover Up by Federici Brands, and you can buy a kit for 60 applications from www.victoriahealth.com.
Color Wow comes in four shades, Blonde, Light Brown, Medium Brown and Dark Brown, but as Gail Federici says – and we have witnessed – it is very forgiving.
On the Victoria Health website, you will see footage of how it works. This mineral powder formulation contains polymers and other compounds so it adheres to dry styled hair, without being sticky or oily (or looking dry). It comes with a two-ended brush and Gail recommends using the smaller brush to apply – professionals can and do use the wider end but it is certainly easier to use the little one until you become completely deft.
You can use it on roots – we saw it cover a good half inch of regrowth – and also temples. Sarah’s colorist at John Frieda's Mayfair salon, Stephen Jones, also recommends stippling it on thinning hairlines.
Another big plus is that it is waterproof, and will last from shampoo to shampoo.
As you know, permanent dark hair colour depends on a chemical called PPD (paraphenylenediamine), which may have some risks attached if used often. Color Wow means that you can extend the time between having all-over dark colour sessions, at home on in salon.
