Fab Find of the Week: Dolce & Gabbana Devotion collection

’Tis the season not only of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but also of vague stirrings of ‘what the heck am I going to wear for the Christmas party’ anxiety.

We have the answer, in a new collection from Dolce & Gabbana which is glamour personified, unveiled recently at a Harrods breakfast with not one but two superstars in attendance, perfumer Olivier Cresp and D&G’s new resident make-up dynamo, Celine Bernaerts.

Now, this ain’t heading-to-the-office stuff. It’s heading-to-a-spiffy-party stuff. But such is make-up’s superpower (and scent’s, too) that honestly, we sometimes find that sweeping on a gorgeous lipstick is enough of a mood jolt to get us out of the door. (Not even joking.)

There are three extravagantly gorgeous make-up items in this new collection, and a fragrance, too. All are emblazoned with one of the icons of the house of Dolce & Gabbana, the ‘Sacred Heart’ – and all, frankly, can be brandished at the dinner table without an atom of embarrassment. (The luxurious feel, meanwhile, belies the fact that the formulations themselves focus on vegan, sustainable, upcycled and often Italian ingredients).

So let’s share our impressions…

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Liquid Lipstick/£38. For something so very long-lasting and transfer-proof, this is incredibly comfortable. With a silky-matte finish that honestly lasts through meals, never mind Martinis, it goes on like a mousse and hydrates, sitting weightlessly on lips till removed. Eight shades, mostly deep nudes and reds, the most classic of which is the deep crimson 400 Orgoglio.

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Extreme Volume Mascara/£34. The clever spirally wand grabs every last lash, cloaking them in an smudge-defying inky blackness. Definitely at the luxe end of the mascara spectrum, but hey, it comes with a D&G Devotion heart atop the wand, and you don’t get that at Superdrug prices.

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Luminizer/£50. Shimmery, glimmery, packed with pearlised pigments and kind-to-the-complexion oils, this can be swept on to create a ‘halo’ on upper lip, brow-bone, cheekbones; not advised after a certain age. This is indeed an object of beauty and very lovely, BUT probably a bit young for us.

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion/from £65 for 30ml eau de parfum. Let us wear cake…! (Happily!) This scent was created by Olivier Cresp, the man who invented the gourmand olfactive family with Thierry Mugler Angel, three decades ago, and knows a thing or two about creating scents that smell good enough to eat. The inspiration here was panettone – in case you didn’t know, D&G create incredible panettones in partnership with Italian experts Fiasconaro, each Christmas, in the most divine tins – and it’s sweet but not oversweet, blending candied citrus and orange blossom with vanilla. Yummy!
