Beauty Clinic: Cleansing with facial wipes...
Q. My skin is quite good but I have started getting really sore itchy spots on my face and neck. I always take my make up off at night and I use face wipes. A. We have a couple of thoughts for your sensitive skin. Firstly, while it’s great that you take off your make-up every night, wipes are probably not the best choice for daily cleansing. They are fine to use occasionally – and certainly better than going to bed without cleansing - but they don't really do the job properly. You don't say which wipes you are using but, in our experience, the cotton used in the wipe itself may irritate the skin, as may ingredients in the cleansing agent. So the wipes may be making your skin problem worse – or possibly causing it.
So, here are the natural wipes we recommend ourselves:
Ellajane Celebrity Organic Face Wipes
Formulated by facialist Deborah Mitchell for her daughter, these large organic cloth wipes, suitable for all skin types, contain apple pectin, honey and extract of peppermint (great for blemishes) and are textured to deep clean and even to remove mascara, according to Deborah.
Faith in Nature 3-in-1 Facial Wipes
Based on skin-healing aloe vera, these natural wipes are gentle and effective. From a US brand, started 40 years ago in Manhattan by one woman (Rivka Rose) with a Beetle car and an unshakeable passion for the environment.
In general, however, we suggest you use a dedicated cleanser for your sensitive skin, maybe a natural balm such as AD Skin Synergy Cleansing Balm for a large soothing pot, which comes an organic cotton muslin face cloth.
Another lovely product is Trilogy Very Gentle Cleansing Cream; the range also features a Very Gentle Calming Fluid, and Very Gentle Moisturising Cream, all available at Victoria Health (see below for details).
