When it comes to cleansing, there are two kinds of water: the kind that gushes out of your tap and micellar water, which could be your skin’s new best friend.

Skin is particularly vulnerable at this time of year – with wind and cold and rain outside and heating inside.  For some of us with sensitive skin, using tap water on our faces can provoke reactions such as redness, blotchiness and uneven tone. So it’s a drum roll for micellar water, which doesn't involve getting the ordinary H2O anywhere near your precious complexion.

We’re so impressed with the very gentle but effective Garnier range that we buy and use it ourselves. It easily removes foundation or tinted BB crème, concealer, powder blush, eye shadow and mascara, and lipsticks with two swipes. (Might need more for anyone who wears heavy make-up.)

Trying to explain how this clear, no rinse liquid works used to make us want to hide our heads in the sand but here goes: the cleansing agent is a mild surfactant, which when added to purified water and an emollient, forms tiny balls called micelles. As the useful independent website, incidecoder.com, explains in its listing for this Garnier product, ‘This All-in-1 cleanser is surprisingly powerful yet gentle to skin. It effectively removes even waterproof makeup, cleanses and refreshes skin. A multi-purpose cleanser that contains Micellar technology. Like a magnet, micelles capture and lift away dirt, oil and makeup without harsh rubbing, leaving skin perfectly clean and refreshed without over-drying.

You do need to apply micellar water on a make up remover pad. In keeping with their Green Manifesto, Garnier also offer Micellar Reusable Make-up Remover Eco Pads. More of an investment that normal cotton wool pads but Garnier claim they will last up to 1,000 washes and they’re definitely a far more planet-friendly option.

Lastly, while leaving home isn’t an option right now, when we can get out and about again micellar water and pads make an easily transportable as well as purse friendly cleansing duo.
