CREAM BLUSHER

We love how goof-proof cream blushers are – well-blended, in the right shade, you can even smooth into cheeks without a mirror. They work equally well alone (on moisturised skin), or over foundation. (A tip, actually: cream blusher is particularly gorgeous when applied with an O, Wow! make-up brush – which you can find on-line at victoriahealth.com – just click here). We specifically request shades that will work across all skintones – so if you’re unsure, be guided by those dispatched to our testers here. Our one caveat: although great on normal/dry complexions, they can disappear quite fast on an oilier skin.

GOLD AWARD – Bagsy Pretty Cheeks

Bagsy is a new-ish brand that’s prettily packaged and fond of a beauty ‘slogan’ and a punnish name – but that slightly belies the fact that these are seriously good products. This domed blusher comes with a twist-off lid, and can either be applied with fingertips or ‘drawn’ onto skin and blended. (They promise it blends so seamlessly you can apply without a mirror.) The shade sent to our testers was Velvet Rose – a slightly scary pink that actually looks very natural on the skin – but there’s a Velvet Coral shade for warmer skintones and summer months. Although creamy in texture, we’ve found it offers impressive staying power, rapidly transforming to a powder finish.

OUR TESTERS' COMMENTS:

'Lovely creamy blusher that you can apply directly to cheeks from the dome-shaped applicator. Very easy to blend in and looked very natural, with a lovely pinched-cheek glow. I really like this and the packaging is truly cute' • 'So convenient to carry when I'm out and about – and it gives nice results; I really like the dewy finish and natural glow' • 'Promises to be an instant pick-me-up and it does lift the face, especially when feeling a little tired and grey! Gorgeous packaging, which would make an ideal gift – very pretty, like a Christmas bauble' • 'Loved this product – so easy to pop in bag to touch up, and no brush required. I had a few compliments saying I was glowing when I wore this.  I found it long-lasting, even when I had been dancing all night at a family wedding. Excellent make-up find' • 'Better than my usual blusher, easier to apply and gave a good healthy colour to my cheeks with a nice sheer finish – but good level of pigment so it lasted. Perfect, for a blusher.'

Bobbi Brown.png

SILVER AWARD – Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks

A classic, this – one which has done well with our testers for The Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible, in the past, and scores brilliantly again in this round of trials. In sleek, slimline black compact fitted with a mirror, the shade which impressed our testers was Powder Pink – quite a deceptive name, we think, as that sounds like a sugared-almond-y colour, whereas this is a neutral rosewood tint. It’s quite universally flattering, but if the Powder Pink shade our testers were assigned isn’t quite right for you, there are eight others to choose from. As the name suggests, it does double duty on lips.

OUR TESTERS' COMMENTS:

'This very soft creamy product gave a lovely soft natural splash of colour to a pale complexion. It blends perfectly – I used my fingers to apply – and has a lasting pigment so doesn't need retouching. The finish is dewy and fresh and I liked it a lot' • 'I absolutely loved this product. It was extremely easy to apply, really wearable and gave a natural but noticeable, very long-lasting finish. I will definitely be replacing it when it eventually runs out' • 'No hype or inflated claims, just says it is suitable for cheeks and lips.  The finish was smooth and sheer and demi-matte. A lovely product' • 'I liked the little compact with a handy mirror, which was so easy to open and use.  Just dip in your finger and dab! Or the pan of colour is large enough if you want to use a brush' • 'I usually use a powder blusher as gel/cream blushers have made me break out before – but I didn't have that problem with this one. I loved that it was double-duty, so cuts down on the number of products I need to carry. I used lip gloss over the top too, to change the look sometimes.'

BRONZE AWARD – Liz Earle Healthy Glow Cream Blush

The buildable, soft texture of this blusher is enriched with natural vitamin E. In five shades (our testers had Nude 03, which delivers a neutral flush), it’s packaged in a very small, neat mirrored navy compact which could be slipped into even the teeniest clutch. As we especially like cream blusher for on-the-go touch-ups when we’re feeling a bit wan, as the day wears on, that’s a real bonus.

OUR TESTERS' COMMENTS:

'10/10. I liked this product very much.  It was not over-packaged but did have a mirror and could be applied with fingertips. The smooth texture was a pleasure to apply and it blended seamlessly. The blush itself looked very fresh, natural and healthy' • 'I usually use a powder blusher but I actually prefer the look achieved with the cream blush. I found I needed a few practice runs, as it was tricky to know how much to apply before powder. It looks slightly dewy over foundation but completely matte under powder with no shimmer. I’m totally converted to cream blusher now' • 'Creaminess made it easy to use with fingers for a natural, "no make-up" effect' • 'Practice made perfect, as I’ve never used cream blusher before – but quite easy once you get the hang of it. I loved the dewier look of this on my cheeks – definitely less ageing than powder. I loved this and will certainly buy from now on.'
