Simply red: Lucia Pica's stunning new Chanel collection

Coco Chanel once wrote: 'Red is the colour of life, of blood, I love red.' Well, so does Chanel's resident make-up artist, Lucia Pica (official title: Chanel Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer). And she's used the shade - which has been a Chanel signature since 1924 – in her debut full collection for the make-up range.

Unsurprisingly, lip products (above) are a key focus for Le Rouge - Collection No1, with stunning and very wearable new reds in Rouge Allure and Rouge Allure Velvet, from a bold poppy to a deep wine/cherry. (As Chanel herself once said: 'Put on lipstick and attack' – and these are just perfect for that.)

But Lucia has also blown our minds with the creation of an eye quartet and an Illusion d'Ombre Velvet (Long-Wear Matte Eyeshadow) in red tones: our perennial advice has been never to put a hint of red anywhere near your eyes, lest it brings out the teeniest broken capillary – and yet these have enough brown in them to be super-flattering, and super-interesting. There's also a fantastic deep burgundy mascara. (See what we mean on Kristen Stewart, below.)

The moral is: never say never (at least not where Chanel are concerned).

Our favourite product of all – and the one which we predict will fly off the shelves (so be quick)? The fantastic limited edition Le Vernis Gloss in Rouge Radical, which is to nails what lip gloss is to your pout (only not sticky): a gorgeous, sheer, shiny red which is chic AND healthy-looking, and which was supposedly inspired by melting red wax down the side of a candle.

And after this, we're on red alert for Lucia's next triumph.
