Hi-ho-ho-ho, silver nails...

We have news for 'mature' hands: there is nothing like a shimmering nail polish to distract from (and we'll be frank here) ropy veins, crepe-y skin and knobbly knuckles. These work on the same basis as pearls, near the face, bringing 'light' to the hands. Honestly, all anyone sees when you waft them around is sparkling and glimmer. So at this time of year, in particular, there are plenty of polishes to choose from - including (for 2014) some fab silver shades. So we've hand-picked (!) our favourites. (And if you have 'young' rather than 'mature' hands? These flatter everyone.)

Mavala Magic Snow (from the Magic Stardust Collection), £4.75 - in John Lewis stores: what you see is teensy particles of silver-white glitter and shimmering flakes. What you don't see is a revoutionary, resin-based formula which allows nails to breathe, and a new generation plasticizer which delivers a fab gloss finish.

Eve Snow London Aria, £14 - buy here: from the award-winning British brand (this scooped Best Nail Polish in the Red Magazine Green Beauty Awards 2014). A rich, molten silver finish, which is enriched with ginkgo biloba, vitamin E and argan oil extract, to moisturise dry nails.

OPI Unfrost My Heart, £11.95 - buy here: this is from OPI's Gwen Stefani collection, and we're loving the cool, gleaming glamour of this silver shade. (To be honest, we were hard-pressed to choose between this and Snow Globetrotter, which swirls with white and rainbow flakes - though save this for the office party/Christmas table; it's a bit full-on disco for the office.)

Nails Inc South Kensington Foil Effect Polish, £12 - buy here: is the go-to when you're in a hurry: a truly metallic finish that doesn't require a base coat, so you can apply while the taxi meter's running and be out of the door in a flash.Of silver...
