Annee de Mamiel is one of our favourite therapists: grounded, wise, a brilliant facialist/therapist – and very wise on the topic of modern living. She's a leading authority on the effects of stress on the skin and founder of the de Mamiel atmosphériques skincare collection, developed to combat the effects of digital media on our skin. Our friend Annee recently shared with us her five top tips for combating the effect of our increasingly digital focused lives on both our skin and general wellbeing – and we wanted to share them with you, too. (We're instantly embracing several of them!)

'Our daily lives are more digital focused than ever before. Everything from hailing a cab to booking a facial is done in a second on your phone or computer, while 'downtime' often means scrolling through Instagram, playlists or news feeds. The result? Challenges to both our physical and mental wellbeing, with headaches, anxiety and disturbed sleeping patterns common complaints attributed to our increasingly digital lives.

'It also presents major challenges for skin. Air pollution, UV rays, and electromagnetic radiation surround us every day. Of these skin stresses, High-Energy Visible light (HEV), emitted by mobile phones and tablets, is one of the most damaging. Strong ‘blue light’ from mobile phones can penetrate the epidermis to cause oxidative stress and free radicals. While you may not be able to see the HEV rays, you can see their effect; issues such as skin inflammation, sensitivity and dehydration are known to be exacerbated or caused by external factors.'

This is why ‘digital pollution proofing’ our lives has become so important,

Tip 1: Rediscover your landline

Landlines may not be as convenient, but they are certainly better for your skin. Unlike mobile phones, they don’t emit any blue light to penetrate skin and create damage. Heavy use of mobile phones can even have a visible effect, as Annee reveals: 'I can usually tell just from looking at my patients which side of their face they use their phone', says Annee. 'They start to show a dull texture on that side.'

Give your skin some self defense against your phone with atmosphériques Exhale Daily Hydrating Nectar SPF30 (£75 for 50 ml). This silky cream creates a shield against HEV pollution, with a unique blend of essences to detoxify and prevent the formation of damaging free radicals while allowing skin to breathe.

Tip 2: Wear a silver wristband at your desk

In Chinese medicine the wrists hold vital acupuncture points. As we sit at our desks, our hands and wrists experience energetic and physical damage as they constantly run over electromagnetic fields. A silver bracelet can reflect 99% of man-made electromagnetic radiation and reinforce our natural energetic field, protecting these vital acupuncture points.

Tip 3: Embrace essential oils

'Research has shown that aromas can have an impact on how we perceive stress and calm our minds', says Annee. While certain essential oils are associated with a particular benefit – for example, studies have shown rose to be calming and lavender to help relieve anxiety - other essential oil benefits come from a blend. de Mamiel Altitude Oil (£28.00 for 10 ml) uses the power of lavender, eucalyptus, fragonia, peppermint and lemon myrtle essential oils to help protect and support the immune system. 'Its like hitting a reset button and clears my mind,' Annee says.

Tip 4: Reinforce your skin’s natural defences

'Feeding your skin to support its barrier function will help to combat the damaging effects of constant environmental stress, allowing it to breathe, rejuvenate and repair,' says Annee. The de Mamiel atmospheriques collection has been designed using only the purest, highest grade essential oils and powerful antioxidants to naturally empower your skin from the inside out.

Tip 5: Eat Antioxidants

Antioxidants repair and protect both inside and out. Blueberries, raspberries as well as seeds and nuts are a great way to boost the skins barrier function. (You might also want to add a powerful antioxidant serum for maximum benefit, such as de Mamiel Intense Nurture Antioxidant Elixir – it's £80 for 30ml – which is an antioxidant-packed super-serum to help skin deal with HEV rays and increase cell renewal and skin oxygen levels for a brighter complexion.)
