My mum is in her fifties and looks fab but she is just beginning to feel the pressure from her friends to have some ‘work’ done and I am so against it! I thought a lesson with a make-up artist to teach her how to apply her make up to give her that youthful glow would be far more sensible! Is there any one that I could book that with? Are there make-up artists that would meet for a consultation?
We absolutely believe in ‘the make-up facelift’.  This spring, Bobbi Brown was actually running a ‘make-up facelift’ promotion, at their counters – and the Bobbi Brown counters are always an excellent ......
First of all, thank you for your very helpful website. Now the question: in your make-up for golden girls section you say: ‘There is an especially good French brand of magnifier called Beauty Look which has suction pads so that you can attach it to your usual mirror.’ I've tried Googling 'Beauty Look mirror', but have had no luck.
We think that the Beauty Look mirror has probably disappeared from the beauty radar (we can’t find it either), but we are converts to the small version: Revlon Magnifying Mirror also ......
My stepdaughter has asked for a general make-up lesson for her birthday. I see that a couple of years ago you recommended Jenny Jordan in Belsize Park (and Stephen Glass at Fortnum & Mason). Would these two still be good choices or do you know of anyone/anywhere else?
Stephen Glass has now departed from Fortnum’s but we have gone into full-on Miss Marple mode and tracked him down to a studio that he’s set up in his own flat ......
With regard to the mineral powdered foundation Colorflo by Susan Posnick.: I'm 44 and with lines around the eyes (and oily T-zone) and I thought that powered foundation sits in/emphasises lines, so always use liquid. I would like to try this, but without being able to test it first - and at £40! - I don’t want to risk wasting my hard-earned cash!
Yes, you do have to be a little careful with mineral make-up in the crinkles round the eye zone, using a light touch – but that’s no reason not to try ......
I am trying to find a UK site which sells Jane Iredale mineral make-up. I followed the link from your directory but there is only a UK address - no website to view what is stocked. Love the sound of the mineral SPF30, plus have heard good reports about the mineral make-up.
An easy answer:  just log on to www.jiproducts.co.uk.  This is the UK authorised stockist for Jane Iredale, which also features useful tips on application;  they sell the whole range on-line and ......
I'm looking to invest in some quality make-up brushes, preferably ones that come in a roll up carry case (but not a killer if they don't!)
Good make-up brushes are an investment.  Frankly, a big part of why make-up artists achieve more impressive, lasting results than most women is because they use the right tools for application ......
It is probably a bit late to ask, but how can I apply suncare over makeup during the day - especially in summer when my skin is super oily and sweaty?
Suggest you print this answer out and keep it for when the sun does shine again!  But it’s true:  this is a beauty challenge.  Every sunscreen we know of will disturb ......
Could you make a recommendation for a one- or two-day make-up school in London? I’m interested in air-brushing. What do you know about the John Woodbridge School, or the Jemma Kidd classes? I’m a make-up artist from the US and will be travelling to London for a family visit, and would like to take a professional make-up class.
We have heard great reports about Jemma Kidd’s school, so do consider this.  John Woodbridge is definitely a specialist in the airbrushing world, but do you want to work in film ......
I’m looking for the number of a Guam stockist but the number on your website calls Philip Kingsley, the trichologist. When I spoke to them they said that they just recently moved there. Do you have the new number for Guam?
The number listed actually gets through to Harrods, where Philip Kingsley has a consulting room, but to access Guam we suggest you visit www.beautique.com, where it’s one of the featured brands ......
I am looking for a stockist for Prescriptives products in the UK other than QVC. Your link on this website is to www.gloss.com who seem to have shut down or gone out of business. Can you suggest another supplier?
We try to keep the site as up-to-date as possible but don’t always know when other sites have disappeared - so thanks for the tip-off.  You don’t say why you don’t ......
Please could you advise me on what moisturiser, cleanser and foundation to use? I’m currently using Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturiser, Lancôme 3 in One Cleanser and Toning Lotion, and Lancôme Adaptive Foundation. I am having terrible problems with a dry nose but very spotty on my chin and upper lip; I have never had such bad skin. I am 36 and came off the Pill a year ago - I don't know if that has something to do with it. I’m thinking of buying some Liz Earle cleanser. Would you recommend this?
Okay, last question first – Liz Earle’s Cleanse & Polish is Sarah’s all-time favourite cleanser, bar none, and the highest rated product ever in all our Beauty Bible consumer surveys.  Rather ......
I live in the USA but am trying to find out about make up courses in London. I would love to find out where Mary Greenwell trained - her work is great.
Mary is a truly amazing artist and a longstanding friend - and the best news of all is that she has just launched her own make-up courses, so you can learn ......
I'm now trying to properly take care of my skin, drinking lots of water etc. but the only problem I’m having is that I apply my make up - a liquid foundation, powder etc. - but within 20 minutes of walking out of the door my make-up has disappeared and I have to re-apply numerous times throughout the day. I have oily/combination skin. Any advice?
Try a primer.  Adding a primer into your make-up regime might seem like just one more step, but as make-up artist Jenny Jordan explains, ‘they not only help to ensure make-up ......
I am 35 and a make-up virgin! I don’t think I can get away with this much longer and I'm craving a bit of glamour! I don’t know where to start so would like to have a make up lesson to learn the fundamentals and what would work best with my skin tone (olive). I am an all-natural girl and an honest, wholesome brand of make-up without any nasties is important to me. Can you recommend who to see and what brands to line my empty makeup bag with?
A bit of a tough call, this one, but on balance we’d suggest you head for an Origins counter - click here for the store locator, which will help you track ......
So - here I am, within a whisker of being 60. Hair completely white and living in the country halfway up the Pennines. Work full-time. Need to get ready for the next decade. Who do I go to, to talk through ideas? Make-up sessions chez Harvey Nicks or wherever are done by girls/women less than half my age. I need someone of my own age who understands…
We understand! Our very best suggestion is to go to make-up artist Jenny Jordan’s Eyebrow & Make-up Clinic at 22 England’s Lane, Belsize Park, London NW3 4TG, tel: 020-7483 2222, www.jennyjordan.com. ......
I find foundations settle into my wrinkles and make me look older, rather than helping. Am I doing something wrong? I always moisturise before trying to lightly apply foundation, but the effect is always the same…
The simple rule is: don’t apply foundation to wrinkles, because it draws attention to them. (So does powder.) Preferably, use foundation areas of uneven skintone – redness, or hyperpigmentation – to ......
I’ve a friend who wants to take a make-up course, for bridal and special occasions. Can you let me know where she can go and study, in London?
You may already have noticed a competition we’re running on the site this month for the Jemma Kidd Make Up School, which offers a fantastic range of courses for non-professionals – ......
Which are the best make-up brushes to buy – synthetic or animal hair? I have bought a few, now, and they all seem to fall apart after a few washes.
With careful washing, brushes should last years. So here’s the how-to, from make-up artist Mary Greenwell: ‘Wash them once a month, with a tiny squirt of liquid wool wash, in warm ......
I am confused by dates on products. I have so many expensive beauty treats at home, which I don’t use on a daily basis, but only for special occasions – like my YSL Touche Eclat, or Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. There are symbols on the packaging that tell me to discard after six months or 12 months after opening – but they’re no way finished, and I could still get lots of use out of them. Do I really need to throw them away? It seems such a waste!
Manufacturers now cover themselves by putting dates on packaging as guidelines for how long to keep them. There are some general rules – for instance, you should replace your mascara every ......
After reading your Beauty Bible I have purchased Eve Lom's cleanser for the first time. I was wondering how long to use a single muslin cloth for? I am worried about it holding bacteria and causing spots.
Cleanliness is most definitely next to godliness when it comes to muslin cloths – and we have, alas, seen plenty of less-than-pristine ones hanging up in bathrooms… And you’re dead right: ......
Where can I get kaolin powder, mentioned in Jo’s natural beauty book? I live in East Sussex.
The best source for most of the natural D-I-Y cosmetic ingredients mentioned in Jo’s book is Neal’s Yard Remedies – she sourced most of her raw materials (beeswax, organic oils, herbs, ......
I am off travelling the world in April – do you have any tips or products that double up, so that my rucksack doesn’t weigh a ton? I already have the magic Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream lined up…
The cosmetics companies will hate us for saying this, but many cosmetics are interchangeable. Eight Hour Cream is the perfect example: a real beauty multi-tasker that works on lips, dry skin, ......
In Jo’s wonderful Ultimate Natural Beauty Book she mentions a recipe for face powder. I have asked for orris root powder in health food stores but just get blank stares – do you know where in London I can get this powder?
We’re so glad you love Jo’s Ultimate Natural Beauty Book and we are delighted it has inspired you to conjure up your own potions. You can buy orris root powder for ......
