I recently purchased The Green Beauty Bible and after reading the first few pages am a bit confused. You mention that toners are not necessary but I always thought that unless your cleanser was pH balanced a toner is essential for re-balancing your pH otherwise your acid mantle will be stripped and bacteria can get in. Help!

A strong, alcohol-based toner is going to do more to strip your acid mantle than anything.  (That - and highly-foaming cleansers and face washes.)  A bit of a song and dance is made of ‘pH-balancing’, we believe.  Certainly, very few of the cleansers that have performed best in our trials tout themselves as ‘pH-balancing’ – users of award-winning Liz Earle Naturally Active Cleanse & Polish, for instance, aren’t suffering mass skin infections or dryness (au contraire…)  So our philosophy is:  use a good cleanser (we have a run-down of them in our Tried & Tested Cleansers, if you click here) – and then if you want to, follow with rosewater or orange flower water or a truly gentle, non-alcoholic skin freshener if you like that feeling of freshness.  (You can usually tell at first sniff if a toner has alcohol in it;  otherwise they often say ‘alcohol-free’ on the label.)  Personally?  We don’t bother with toners at all, and our skins are pretty trouble-free.
