May 30th, 2010: Holiday Hair Care
Q I am just about to go on a sea and sand holiday, with lots of sun (fingers crossed) and swimming. What can I do to look after my hair please?
A We consulted legendary trichologist Philip Kingsley for you. First of all, top marks for planning in advance - the combination of sun and salt water can wreak havoc on your hair. Sun alone breaks down the protein structure of the hair and also sucks moisture from the hair cells, roughening the outer layer (cuticle) and making it look dry, coarse and frizzy! Not a great look…
Twenty years ago, Philip created a product called Swimcap to look after the tresses of the US Olympic Synchronised Swimming Team, and we suggest you invest in this for your hols. Not only does it prevent your crowning glory getting damaged and discoloured by the UV rays, salt water, wind - and don’t forget the chlorine in swimming pools - it also provides an ultra-conditioning treatment to remoisturise hair. Swimcap features castor and olive oils to nourish and hydrate, with elastin to boost suppleness.
Apply Swimcap after each time you swim. It’s £18 for 150 ml (for stockist details, www.philipkingsley.com) and worth every penny.
Philip also suggests simple measures to keep your hair in good condition, including to shampoo and condition daily, twice if necessary, with a shampoo that suits your hair type. Also, do wear a closely woven sun hat whenever possible, with a large brim to protect your face as well as hair. Or tie a scarf over your hair: in fact, why not do both, for double protection, particularly if you have dry and/or coloured hair.
Other Philip Kingsley products that we know women swear by include Elasticizer, a deep conditioner that you apply to damp hair before shampooing; apply from the mid length of hair in sections, working it well into the ends, £25 for 150 ml. For summertime generally, we love Preen Cream, a lightweight, smoothing emulsion that leaves hair frizz-free and shiny, £13 for 50ml.
And we needn’t remind you to slop on the sunscreens every two hours on the rest of you, need we?
We . . . OPI Shrek Minis, £12.15. We love Shrek. For a couple of grown-ups, we are ridiculously excited about Shrek Forever After. And we love the way these will put a smile on your face as well as a slick of unusual polish on your fingers - or, we suggest, toes. They come in dinky bottles (so that it doesn’t matter you’ll get bored with them by the end of summer), in pretty pale blue (What’s With The Cattitude?), chartreuse (Fiercely Fiona), mauve (Rumple’s Wiggin’) and – yes – Who The Shrek Are YOU? green. Chanel Jade? So last year!
