March 28th, 2010: All-over sensitive skin
Q I’ve always had sensitive skin and it’s now slowly worsening and affecting every part of my body. I can’t use any standard perfumed shower gel, bubble bath, deodorant or moisturiser. My skin doesn’t look chapped or break out, but it is itchy and tender, and kind of red and blotchy in badly affected areas – my hands, lower legs and underarms. My two year old son has the same. The doctor prescribes steroid cream, and an aqueous cream but they don’t work long term. Can you help?
A We’re so sorry to hear this. Firsly, both shower gel and bubble bath contain a detergent called sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) which is known to irritate sensitive skin. So too does aqueous cream – something that many GPs do not know. So please don’t use any products that contain SLS or its close relation, sodium laureth sulphate (SLES). (Many other products contain SLS/SLES, including toothpastes and shampoos, so we suggest you get in the habit of checking labels. There are plenty of natural products that use natural foaming agents, though don’t expect quite the body of foam you get with SLS/SLES. )
