May 2nd, 2010: Calming hair products
Q I have developed an allergy to cyclopentasiloxane after using Kerastase masquintense, Kerastase anti-frizz Oleo-relax, and John Frieda Frizz-Ease. It manifests itself in a burning rash on my head, face and neck and spreads also to my hands and body. I would very much appreciate if you could recommend a natural calming anti-dote and some natural hair products..
A We’re sorry to hear about your allergy to this silicone fluid, which is a common (and usually well-tolerated) component of cosmetics, included for its emollient properties. As well as hair products, it’s also used in deodorants, sunblocks and some skincare items (also silicone-based personal lubricants). So do be careful about using these too.
One option to try as an antidote is the supplement Aller-DMG by Food Science of Vermont (£15.32 for 60 tablets from www.victoriahealth.com). As well as helping relieve the symptoms of respiratory discomfort caused by hayfever and asthma, this nutritional supplement helps to reduce skin irritation. It contains the herb perilla, a member of the mint family, which has been shown to inhibit the release of histamine (which causes the allergic reactions). The DMG bit – dimethylglycine – comes from beets and helps to modulate the immune system’s overreaction so it doesn’t stick on red alert all the time. (Sarah gets very upset eyes – pink, sore and puffy - in the hayfever season and takes Aller-DMG to help with this problem.)
Of the many natural hair products now available, we think that Botanical Shampoo and Conditioner by Botanical Therapeutics might help you. Designed to sooth and moisturise all inflammatory scalp conditions (including dandruff), the extra mild formulation contains no synthetic preservatives and is free of sodium lauryl sulphate. Both the shampoo and conditioner cost £13.50 each for a hefty 360ml, from www.victoriahealth.com.
We . . . Sarah Chapman Skinesis Dynamic Defence SPF15, £42 for 40 ml. There was literally no point wearing sun protection during the gloomiest winter ever. (Snow protection, yes.) But now the days are blissfully longer, we’re enjoying this daily skin-shielding moisturiser from gifted facialist-to-the-stars Sarah Chapman: packed with omega oils, it’s nicely moisturising (some SPF day creams don’t seem to quench skin at all) yet sinks in without leaving skin greasy, and is great under make-up. And the packaging isn’t just stylish: we really love the no-lid, no-mess pump - one push dispenses exactly the right amount.
