August 22nd, 2010: Safety of essential oils in pregnancy
Q As most natural and organic products contain essential oils, are they okay to use during pregnancy?
A According to clinical pharmacist Shabir Daya, ‘the vast majority of essential oils in skin and bodycare products are perfectly safe for use during pregnancy because we are not applying or using the pure essential oil – they are diluted down within the formulation.’
However, he adds that ‘There are certain oils which one would either avoid (even after dilution) or use with caution and these include basil, cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary and thyme.’
‘The above list would be best avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy but could be used subsequently especially when they are part of a formulation where they are diluted down (unless the whole formula is an aromatherapy blend with no carrier oil to dilute it down).’
‘Essential oils safe for use during pregnancy, especially if diluted down to the appropriate blend, include bergamot, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, sandalwood, tea tree and ylang ylang.’
There’s a natural range you might like to try called Boo Boo Mummy, from Victoria Health, which is based on natural oils (argan oil, with passion-flower, avocado and sweet almond oils), shea butter, and herbs such as centella and ginkgo biloba, plus botanicals including chamomile, hibiscus, and white lily.
The range includes Bosom Buddy, a bust firming treatment, £18.99 for 125 ml, Perineum Massage Oil, £12.99 for 100 ml, Silky Soft Body Wash, £9.99 for 250 ml, Soft & Creamy Body Smoother, £14.99 for 190 ml, Splendidly Soothing Bath Soak, £9.99 for 250 ml and Super Stretchy Miracle Oil, £14.99 for 100ml.
We . . . Yardley English Lavender Cologne Stick, £3.50 for 20 ml. Yardley’s just about to get a big makeover – and happily, this little stick of cooling wondrousness will stay in the range. Swipe over pulse points when the temperature rises: the soothing, aromatic gel works on your senses to instantly de-stress and rebalance – and cool you faster than you can say ‘heatwave’. An unsung lavender hero product which deserves its moment in the sun!
