July 18th, 2010: Light Foundations
Q I'm auburn haired and have very fair thin skin - also ageing! Just celebrated my 50th birthday. My current foundation has started to lie on my skin rather obviously so my question is: are there any very light-textured foundations which will give that gorgeous dewy look and do a bit of concealing?
A Actually, we don’t think it’s just fair thin skins that are looking for the perfect light foundation. Or at least it shouldn’t be. Really, as supermodel Lauren Hutton told us when she got into her fifties, the trick with getting older is to apply less make-up better.
But it all starts with moisturiser – and possibly a primer. No foundation will look good unless it goes on a smooth moisturised skin. You don’t say what you use as a moisturiser so we’ll just hope you’re using a good day version. (Lots of suggestions in our books and Jo swears by Liz Earle Superskin Moisturiser, £32.50 for 50 ml and Sarah is currently wedded to Sun Chlorella Cream, £54.95 for 45 grams.) As a primer, we suggest you shimmy along to the nearest Estée Lauder counter. They have three options of Face Primer Plus, each £19.50: Smoothing Matte Base to minimise pores and fine lines, also absorb excess oil, Color Correcting Base to neutralise redness and calm skin, and the one we think you’ll go for – Illuminating Base, which leaves skin with a soft pearly underglow.
The three bases we recommend for you are Clinique Almost Make-up SPF15, £20, a sheer liquid base which has six colour options: Fair, Light, Medium, Neutral Fair, Deep and Neutral. But please, do look at Clinique’s clever Foundation Finder, on their website (look under Makeup, then Foundations), for more options, such as Supermoisture Makeup, £20 for 30 ml, which is specially formulated for very dry to dry skin.
Secondly, try Chanel Teint Innocence Naturally Luminous Fluid Makeup SPF 12, £29 for 30ml. This offers a light coverage, with natural satin finish and light-reflecting pigments to add a spot of radiance! We love this a lot.
And thirdly, Sarah’s long-time favourite, Crème de la Mer: The SPF 18 Fluid Tint, £50 for 50ml (don’t faint: it lasts for over six months), which comes in Light, Medium and Dark. It’s really a tinted moisturiser with a bit of foundation so it conceals small flaws and leaves skin looking dewily fabulous.
We think most people don’t need concealers just a spot of heavier foundation if necessary: for which Clinique Even Better Foundation, which comes in 14 shades, is great if you don’t have another favourite, £20 for 30 ml.
 We  . . . Crabtree & Evelyn Heritage Soaps, £5 each for 100 g. We do love a gorgeous bar of soap, and Crabtree & Evelyn’s reissue of several of their al-time great soaps has reminded us of some glorious fragrances, to be enjoyed every time we suds away life’s grime. For the packaging, Crabtree raided their archives – and we admit we came over all nostalgic when we saw them! Our favourites? So-refreshing Lime, and the hint-of-amber Blackcurrant, which definitely has a slightly Ribena-ish tang, too. Our tip: before we use a new bar, we like to keep soap in our lingerie drawers, to infuse our smalls with prettiness. And soaps don’t come much prettier than these…
