April 18th, 2010: Tinted moisturiser
Q I'm currently trying to work out the best tinted moisturiser/foundation for me to use please. At 33, my skin is normal and clear (few lines coming but not too bad yet) so I don't want to use heavy make-up. But I do get very dry skin if i don't use a decent moisturiser for dry skin (I am a great Liz Earle fan). I tan easily but when not tanned I can look pale. Budgetwise I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds but will happily spend a reasonable amount to get the right make up!
A We have several suggestions for you. Firstly, if you have dry skin, we think it always make sense to apply a light moisturiser under your tinted moisturiser, leaving a few minutes between the two. We like to use a moisturiser with an SPF (the more sun protection the better in the summer months is our motto), such as Kimberly Sayer Ultra Light Organic Facial Moisturiser SPF25, which is £24.10 for 150ml (it lasts us all summer and well into the autumn).

If you can spring for Crème de la Mer’s prices, we think that The SPF18 Fluid Tint, £50 for 50ml (again it will last a good six months) is pretty well the best tinted moisturiser that also gives a little bit of cover – enough to even out skintone and cover tiny flaws but not settle in lines. In three shades: Light, Medium and Dark.
For a budget buy, we’re really impressed by Nivea Visage Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Tinted Day Cream, a real steal at £10.85 for 50ml. It claims to match any skin tone – and lives up to that, in our experience. It provides less cover but you could always add a tiny dab of foundation to the moisturiser (blend in your palm) or a little concealer where you need it.
And finally, even if you tan easily we suggest that exposing your face to the sun is the best way to increase those lines and wrinkles. So do apply a sunprep religiously, shade your eyes with Jackie O-type big sunnies, and wear a big hat – you’ll look glam as anything, and your skin (and hair) will thank you for it in the long run. Fake it to make it is the mantra when it comes to tanning.
We . . . Charles Worthington Results Sensitive, £4.39 each. If sensitive skin is a widespread problem (affecting up to 63% of us), so is sensitive scalp. So hurrah for Charles Worthington for creating the first mass-market range to target touchy scalps: with renowned soothers cucumber extract and aloe vera, as well as gentler cleansing ingredients, the Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave-in Detangling Spray all deliver lustrous shine without the itch factor.
