May 16th, 2010: Hair protection
Q Would you be able to recommend a good heat protector for hair please?
A We’re assuming that you are looking for one to use with heated tongs, straighteners etc. And the first thing we would say is never ever to use any tool that heats the hair on wet or even slightly damp tresses – it boils the water in the hair, and the damage is dreadful, according to hair stylists.
Another thing while we’re at it: please don’t use heated hair tools every day. In fact, use them as little as you can – within reason, we know you want to keep your hair in the style to which… - but less is better: try for every other day rather than daily.
ghd, the leading company for hair tools, actually markets its own Thermal Protector Spray, £9.95, with versions for normal and fine hair, weak and damaged, and dry/coarse, from www.ghdhair.com and currently, if you buy an item of GHD equipment which heats your hair, you get a Thermal Protector Spray free.
The well-respected hair brand Kérastase, experts in hair care, have their own Nutritive Nectar Thermique, £11.65 for 150 ml. This intensely nourishing cream targeted at dry hair has a ‘thermo-protective heat-activated ingredient, which seals softness into the hair fibre’, according to the blurb, and protects dry to very dry hair.
Kérastase also boasts a specific range for going-in-the-sun hair (another form of hair heating…), which comes highly recommended by beauty journalists. This includes Soleil Micro-Voile Protecteur, £14.65 for 100 ml, Soleil Bain Apres-Soleil, £11.65 for 250ml, and Soleil Masque UV Defense Active, £21 for 200 ml.
We . . . Elizabeth Arden Anniversary Lipstick, £18 (exclusive to House of Fraser) and Anniversary Scented Candle, £25 (exclusively at Arden counters in John Lewis). To celebrate 100 years since Elizabeth Arden threw open the doors of her salon on Fifth Avenue they’re launching two limited edition must-haves. First: a truly iconic show-stopping red lipstick in a so-glamorous case, which embodies 40s glamour (and is enriched with vitamins A, C and E, plus aloe). But our real favourite is the porcelain candle – scented with a floral essence of their Red Door fragrance – which is destined to make a great trinket holder for the dressing table, once it’s flickered its last.
