August 15th, 2010: Skincare for combination skin with blackheads
Q Hi! I have combination skin, suffer from constant blackheads on my nose and cheeks, but my skin is also sensitive and being 39 years old I want some form of anti-aging skincare too! What products would you recommend for me to use, from cleansing to masks? Thanks!
A Blackheads (aka comedones) occur when the pores of the skin open to the surface and the sebum (the oil or lipid in the follicle), which contains the skin pigment called melanin, oxidises in the air and turns a brown/black colour. You can’t wash away blackheads but very gentle exfoliation should help. We suggest trying Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser by Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare, which contains lots of skin-healing botanicals. You remove the cleanser by gently rubbing with a muslin cloth dipped in hot water, which exfoliates. (The cloth must, must!, be hot-washed daily so you’re not spreading any infection.)
You could also try Liz Earle’s Gentle Face Exfoliator, which is the only one we’ve found that really lives up the name. And Liz is a great advocate of steaming after cleansing and exfoliating, as she describes in her book Skin Secrets, which contains a wealth of useful information. She says: ‘the easiest time to remove blackheads is just after steaming when skin is softer. Apply a small dab of plant oil or balm to the affected area. Wrap both index fingers in a tissue (pull it in half, so you have two thin sheets) and gently press the blemish to unclog the plugs of sebum. Wipe clean and follow with a sweep of skin tonic. If the blackhead or spot is deep, don’t push or poke too hard, it may not be ready to be extracted. A tip: good light is essential for this, and possibly a magnifying mirror.
You could then apply Liz’s Brightening Treatment Mask, which we both love. As a moisturiser, try Skin Repair for normal/combination skin, which should cover your ageing concerns as well.
Now the good news: you can try these out in sample sizes. Click on the Liz Earle page and scroll down to see kits including Great Skin Starts Here Collection, for just £23.10, and Jo & Sarah’s Favourites, for £24.25. Great Skin Starts Here includes Cleanse & Polish, Instant Boost Skin Tonic, Skin Repair Moisturiser, Gentle Face Exfoliator and Daily Eye Repair. Our favourites includes Cleanse & Polish and Brightening Treatment Mask plus Superbalm.
We really think this should help your poor skin!

We . . . Natio Spa with Organics Pep-Up Body Cleanser, £8 for 210 ml. When we need revving up in the morning – or invigorating in hot weather when we’re wilting – this is a real sense-awakener: a gently foaming body cleanser, loaded with oils of peppermint, basic, eucalyptus and lemongrass, from an Australian brand (boasting four generations of skincare expertise) that has now landed here. Non-skin-drying, it’s also said to be de-congesting when you have a cold. (Though we’re hoping not to have to put it through its paces, on that front.)
