June 13th, 2010: Frown line filler
Q Please can you suggest a product to help the dreaded frown line on my forehead? It's a singleton so far, but I can't bear it to double up. I am 52, and my skin is in very good condition due to using Liz Earle products religiously so I don't wear much make-up unless I am going out - then I use Philosophy Sheer Tint Primer, with Bare Minerals foundation. They sort out my open pores but this deep line is driving me mad - there's so much on the market and I don't know what to get!
A We sympathise – Sarah particularly, who looks at her single tall vertical furrow and its smaller companions rather crossly. Actually, one big thing is to get enough sleep – and also to have your eyes tested. Squinting at the world – and a computer screen – really makes those lines worse. A good pair of specs, and sun glasses, can allow existing lines to soften and may prevent more sprouting.
Meanwhile, we have the technology! Or rather we know who does… It’s a miraculous product called Tri-Aktiline Instant Deep Wrinkle Filler by Good Skin Labs, £27.99 for 30 ml tube (which lasts for years…). This features a combination of ingredients that really do soften and smooth out the appearance of frown lines, wrinkles and crows feet, the moment you pat it gently on. We promise it’s true – we see it for ourselves every morning.
Tri-Aktiline also claims to reduce the appearance of wrinkle depth and length after eight weeks of continued use. To be honest, we’re not certain about this. Sarah’s certainly haven’t got worse so maybe it does. But frankly, the immediate effect is such a boon that we’d go on using it for that alone.
Tri-Aktiline contains gatuline and argirline to help relax facial muscles and kombuchka which may have antioxidant properties to prevent further damage. It was tested in-house at Good Skin Labs but not against a control product, so subjects may have benefitted simply from applying a moisturiser. (Unlike our own tests, where women are asked to apply the product to one side of their faces and use their own product on the other, or nothing if that’s what they usually don’t do!)
As for the rest, go on moisturising, and don’t skip the sun preps – they help stop lines and wrinkles, as well as brown spots.
We . . . Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener, £22. Clever Bobbi Brown. You know how most under-eye concealers tend to be super-pale, so that if you’re not careful you end up with a too-pale area under the eyes instead of a shadow? (Sort of a reverse-panda effect.) Well, this pump-action concealer wand is slightly pigmented so that it just makes your under-eyes appear the same colour as the rest of your face, while still containing brightening, circle-erasing pigments. Already a bestseller, it’s now in a handbag-friendly portable size, and comes in eight shades.
