July 11th, 2010: Consequences of chemotherapy

Q Is there any solution to the missing eyelashes when you go through chemotherapy? I know you cannot use false eyelashes because you have no eyelashes in the first place,a nd the glue could be potentially a bacteria issue.

A You’re right about false eyelashes but there is a way to create the effect of lashes.  We turned to a wonderful charity called Look Good…Feel Better (LGFB), which we have supported for many years.  It’s the only national organisation working to help women with the visible side effects of cancer treatment, which can be so demoralising.  As well as taking beauty consultants from the major brands into hospitals to show women how to use products, LGFB also produce a self-help kit (more on that below).

To compensate for losing your lashes, LGFB advise using a very soft kohl eyeliner pencil to outline your eyes, giving definition to your face, just as lashes do.   Starting from the outer corner of the eye and working inwards to the centre lid, make small dash-like strokes close to the lash line, top and bottom.  When you get above your pupil, in the centre of your lid, you can decide if you want to take a fainter line a little further in.  If you do, just be careful to make it lighter so it doesn’t make your eyes look close-set.  Blend/smudge the line with the sponge end on the eyeliner or with a cotton bud.

Fair-skinned women usually look best with a grey-ish tone of pencil; medium to Asian and black skins with soft brown or even black shades.  When you use a pencil for the first time, warm the colour by rolling it on your hand so you can apply it smoothly.  Always sharpen your pencils regularly using a proper cosmetic sharpener – but make sure you use a soft kohl pencil so the point doesn’t damage your skin.  Good brands include Lancome, Bobbi Brown, Max Factor and Rimmel.

Lancome Le Crayon Kohl, £17.50.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Eye Pencil, £14.50.

Max Factor Kohl Eye Liner Pencil, £4.49.

Rimmel London Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil, £2.99.

Lastly, do take a look at LGFB’s website, www.lgfb.co.uk, and click on ‘Confidence Kit’, a self-help DVD and booklet set that brings together everything LGFB has learnt over 15 years of helping women with cancer.  It’s packed full of advice on skincare and make-up, wig selection and styling, nail care and demonstrations on scarf tying and other head coverings.  The DVD shows precisely how to draw on missing lashes and eyebrows, and is an invaluable tool.

Moroccanoil Restorative Hair MaskWe Love. . . Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask, £29.95 for 250 ml at www.HQhair.com if you click here – and simply add the code BBHQ11 at the checkout.  Post-beach hair calls for tons of TLC and this super-rich mask – from the ‘cult’ brand that’s taking the UK by storm (after doing the same in the States) is incredibly re-glossing and strengthening.  (Great for de-tangling speedboat hair!)  We’re rather addicted to the sweet, ambery smell, too – as well as the shine this delivers.  (Tip:  the longer you can leave it on, the glossier you’ll be…)
