August 8th, 2010: Concealing Varicose Veins
Q I have varicose veins on my legs and was looking for invisible tights or invisible make-up for my legs. This is for an outfit I have for my daughter's wedding which comes calf length.
A We turned to our friend Kate Shapland – aka ‘the Legologist’ - whose blog is mandatory reading for anyone who loves their pins! It’s thelegroom.blogspot.com - so go and spend a few minutes on that.
The Legologist says: ‘Oddly, given that varicose veins affect up to 20 percent of women – and spider veins more so - specific camouflage topicals are few and far between. I’m not impressed with many of them and facial concealers don’t offer sufficiently heavy duty coverage. What you want is a cover with a very high pigment density, easy spreadability (so you need the tiniest amount) and genuinely good tenacity – it should cling on even when skin is wet. Having said that, the ideal is to ‘soften’ the look of varicose veins rather than trying to mask them completely because, as with blemishes, this invariably highlights them even more. Not too much to ask you would think, but it seems to present a formulation challenge!’
‘The Legologist is impressed by is Nyce Legs Spray On Instant Nylons (£15, victoriahealth.com). This is a leg perfector rather than a self tan, although it does give skin a wash of colour (rather like American tan tights but without the shine that can make legs look like barrels) which lasts for a few days. It comes in three shades: Nude, Medium Beige and Dark Beige. Choose the one closest to your skintone (likely to be nude if you are pale-skinned and haven’t been on holiday yet). It’s pigment-rich and comes out in a fine spray. Stand in the shower and lightly spray it over your legs then rub it in gently to even the colour up. It doesn’t rub off on clothes but allow yourself plenty of time before getting dressed. And don’t forget to wash your hands. I recommend applying it on the morning of the big day, but give yourself a ‘dry’ run first to make sure you’re fully confident about using it – weddings are nerve-wracking enough and the whole point is you don’t want to be worrying about your veins. If your outfit is calf-length, there is no reason why you needn’t apply the product to mid-thigh – no one will see! ‘
‘Do your legs ache too? Those who suffer from varicose veins often find their legs are murder after standing for a while. If yours feel the pressure, let me guide you towards Charles Jordi Cool Legs Spritz (£9, victoriahealth.com). When the bride has left, spray it on your legs and pop them up for ten minutes and a rejuvenating rest.’
Should it be a slightly chilly day, our friends at www.tightsplease.co.uk tell us ‘Wolford have two pairs of tights which are incredible – look at Wolford Fatal 15 Tights, £21.99 from the website, or Wolford Miss W Tights, £17.84 currently. Depending on her skin tone she could choose either ‘Cosmetic’ from Fatal 15, or ‘Caramel’ from Miss W.’
We . . . L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Smoothing Resurfacing Primer, £12.99. A teeny pot of magic, this. The whole territory of fake ‘fillers’ – primers or silicone fillers that you pat into lines – is becoming hugely exciting, but this latest from L’Oréal has blown us away: a real now-you-see-them-now-you-don’t line filler, which totally softens the appearance of lines in a flash, leaving a matte but silky finish. Truly, a facelift in a jar.
