June 6th, 2010: Body Lotions
Q I am 42 and despite the fact I know I should, I never moisturise my body after showering, bathing etc. It is just SOOO boring and I find I am aware of the feel of the lotions on my skin during the day. However, I know I ought to get into a routine - so I hope you may be able to point me in the direction of a product/s that is/are a pleasure to use - easily absorbed and yummy smelling. My only request would be - no cocoa butter...I can't bear the smell.
A We sympathise! But truly it is worth the effort. Just one thing you could do as well: exfoliate (aka body scrub) in the shower. Oh actually two things: body brush on dry skin before you get wet. (We like the Origins Raffe Body Brush, £10.) Both these slough off dead skin and will make your skin unbelievably soft, then you can get away with applying body lotion every other day (or so…).
The scrub we particularly love is totally natural Essential Care Coconut Candy Scrub, which has won a bunch of awards including one from our book The Green Beauty Bible. A snip at £27.99 for a big 200g tub, this good-enough-to-eat product contains sugar cane crystals, rich in glycolic acid to rejuvenate dull skin, with coconut oil and ooops - cocoa butter! But we really don’t think you can smell it. If you can’t even bear the thought – and feel like splashing out – choose REN Moroccan Rose Otto Sugar Body Polish, which romped away with the highest score ever (an average of 9.33/10 from our ten testers) for a tried & tested Body Scrub in The Green Beauty Bible. As we said, not cheap at £30.65 for 330ml, but hey you’re worth it! Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare Energising Body Scrub came in with a very creditable 8.8/10, and is moderately priced at £12.50 for 200 ml.
Now! Body lotions… we have a hoard of wonderful ones, both our own favourites and those which scored highly in our Tried & Tested category. We suggest Yes to Carrots C Is Smooth Body Moisturizing Lotion, £7.99 for a generous 250 ml, from Victoria Health – our testers loved it and promise it smells more baby powdery than carroty. Comments include: ‘Ten out of ten, for light, creamy texture, immediately absorbed, good packaging, skin immediately moisturised and comfy’.
Sarah’s perennial favourite is Seven Wonders Miracle Lotion, £13.95 for 237ml from Victoria Health, which is packed with aloe vera, 14 natural herbs plus sweet almond and olive oils and does what it says – ie leaves skin, supple, velvety smooth and deeply hydrated. Also a great after sun.
We . . . ESPA Travel Essentials Collection, £38. If you’re anything like us, you hate those plastic Ziploc bags we’re all forced to transfer our cosmetics to, before flying. So we welcome this see-thru, stylish zip-up kit in which none of the ESPA skincare goodies are over 100 ml (so you won’t get them confiscated). Hydrating Cleansing Milk, Floral Spafresh, Body Smoothing Shower Gel (much nicer than those in-flight hand washes) and a choice of ESPA Moisturising, Balancing or Regenerating Complex will ensure that you touch down looking gorgeous, and (thanks to ESPA’s aromatherapeutic powers) feeling a bit more ‘chilled’ than usual.
