July 4th, 2010: Eyebrow makeovers
Q Hello - love the Beauty Bible website and the books! A friend and I are in dire need of eyebrow make-overs - can you suggest someone in London that we could go to?
A You’re so wise to think of your brows. They’re one of the most important elements in the ‘architecture’ of your face and well-shaped brows can enhance – almost transform – your appearance. We’re thinking particularly of a friend whose dark beetling brows overwhelmed her rather lovely (and not small) grey eyes. With a bit of help from a make-up artist, her brows were licked into shape and her eyes came out from under.
We’ve both had nigh on disastrous experiences with reputed ‘brow queens’! Sarah had virtually all her rather sparse (after much too much tweezing in her teens) brows removed. ‘They did come back…but it was a dodgy time.’ Likewise Jo lost most of hers in a tweeze job…. So the motto is: who ever you go to, agree first on what you want. It’s rather like going to the hairdresser: you can sit like a rabbit in the headlights while your precious hairs are removed. And when you find your voice… it’s too late!
Without a doubt, we would go to superfacialist Vaishaly Patel, who offers an Initial Consultation and Eyebrow Shaping for £70, then maintenance sessions for £45. An Eyebrow Tint is £30.
Vaishaly uses the ancient method of hair removal called threading, which is amazingly quick and accurate (and doesn’t hurt, you just get teeny little tweaks). Find her at Vaishaly Clinic, 51 Paddington Street, London W1U 4HR, tel: 020 7224 6088, www.vaishaly.com
And if you want more information on plucking brows yourself at home, you can find it on our website, www.beautybible.com, go to Beauty Info, then look under Eyes, in the section called Brow Beat. The only thing Sarah would say is that, on the advice of a legendary Manhattan ‘brow queen’, she does pluck the top line of her brows. Having rather Fiona-Bruce like arches and a narrow face, she finds that just flattening out the inverted V gives the illusion of her face being a tad wider.
Oh, and if you’re looking for a brow pencil, we love Soap & Glory Arch de Triumph, just £7.50, a soft stubby pencil in a shade that seems to suit everyone, which won an award in Beauty Bible Beauty Steals. One tester said: ‘I can create an eyebrow shape like Kylie Minogue, and having plucked my brows to oblivion in the 1980s, having natural full brows is a joy!’.
We . . . Murad SPF15 range, £23.95-51.50 (all for 50 ml) – but you get 10% off that at www.beautyexpert.co.uk when you visit from our site; no need to add a code – the discount is taken off at checkout. Most skincare companies seem to think that daily face protection should be ‘one-size-fits-all-skintypes’ – so we welcome Dr. Howard Murad’s ‘portfolio’, with options for a range of complexions. Resurgence Sheer Lustre Day Moisture SPF15, £51.50, offers radiance for mature and dry complexions; Oil Control Mattifier, £29.50, does just what it says; Correcting Moisturiser SPF15 (Redness Therapy), £29.95, tones down high colour; Energizing Pomegranate Moisturiser SPF15, £23.95, offers lightweight hydration. So: no excuse not to shield any kind of skin, from now on.
