April 4th, 2010: Red veins
Q I have a lot of red veins on my cheeks and sensitive skin. I am looking for a mask to help cool and soothe my skin and so minimise the look of the veins.
A We both have sensitive skin and tend to a few broken veins (due to our outdoor lifestyles) so we sympathise. When you’re buying skincare always look for products that tell you they’re calming and/or soothing. The products we list below all did well in our Tried & Tested survey for The Green Beauty Bible, scoring an average of 8/10 and above with our ten women panels who tested them.
Dr Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin-Calming Face Mask, £31 for 100 ml: said to be clinically proven to reduce redness, this contains soothing plant ingredients plus marine algae to help repair the skin barrier and help guard against flare-ups. One tester wrote: ‘this calmed my daughters stress-related flare-up and redness; left overnight it made her skin feel calmer and hydrated’. So definitely worth a try we’d say.
Dr Hauschka Soothing Mask, £29 for 30 ml: formulated to give intensive support to even the most sensitive skin, and reduce redness and inflammation. This well-respected German brand is known for its biodynamic (by the phases of the moon) method of growing, harvesting and processing the plants that go into the products. One tester said: ‘used weekly, it reduced flare-ups of redness and dry skin’.
Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare Intensive Nourishing Treatment, £4.75 for 15 ml tube: our sensitive skins both love this calming and very moisturising mask, which is designed for stressed skin (also for dry and dehydrated complexions). Leave while you soak in the bath or overnight. It contains borage oil to nourish and plump, comfrey and D-panthenol to promote healthy skin growth. Plus you get to sample a small size for under a fiver!
In general, we’d also recommend avoiding extremes of hot and cold (eg saunas) and wrapping up against the cold and particularly against rough winds. Overdoing very hot spicy foods and also alcohol doesn’t help. Curiously, Sarah used to have more red veins in her twenties than she does now, and can only put it down to taking better care and leading a calmer life… Oh, and finally, avoid scrubs or using anything scratchy on your face, won’t you?

 We  . . . Donna Karan Iris, £55 for 100 ml. Sweet, powdery iris is one of the perfume world’s most precious ingredients: it has to be hand-harvested, hand-washed and then left to dry for years. Its soft sensuality is perfectly captured in this new creation, in which orris (iris) butter and iris absolute are fused prettily with rose de Mai and violet flower, on a smoudering base of vetiver and rose ambrette. To honest, it smells to us less like a mass market designer scent than a niche, artisan creation (and that’s good). And the tall, cylindrical black glass flacon is as glamorous as it gets.
