Q I'm 51, fit and healthy, but have just discovered I've acquired jowls and turkey neck! Can you recommend some products for me?
A We’d love to tell you that we’ve found a product that diminishes a sagging jawline but the truth is that we don’t think there is one. We did however consult Dr Elisabeth Dancey of Bijoux Medi-spa on your behalf (find her at 149 Ebury Street, London SW1W 9QN, tel: 020 7730 0765, www.elisabethdancey.co.uk).
We’ve known Dr Dancey for years (and you may have caught her in ‘Ten Years Younger’) and rate her highly as a longterm practitioners of cosmetic medicine. She explains that as we get older, we lose fat from the temples and upper part of the face, so there is less volume and less support for tissue; because the upper face looks thinner, the eye is drawn more to the jawline. The jowls appear because the fat now tends to be stored there, rather than the upper face.
To add volume across the top half thus diminishing jowls, she recommends injections of Sculptra, which encourages the body to produce more collagen and thus increase tissue volume. This is not a quick (or cheap) fix, taking about three sessions (each £450) over several months, but the results should last about three years. For jowls and jawline, she recommends combining Sculptra with a homeopathic treatment to persuade the fat cells to behave like bright bouncy young things.
Sometimes, a very tiny amount of Botox is added into the process to ease the muscles and achieve a soft natural result. Dr Dancey believes that this multi-pronged type of non-surgical facelift gives such a good result that it should always be considered before a surgical lift.
For the neck, however, there are lots of lovely products which we can confidently recommend on the basis of theTried & Tested results in our Beauty Bible books. We wouldn’t be without it.
Liz Earle Natural Active Skin Repair Moisturiser, £16.25 for 50ml, is not a targeted neck cream but did terrifically well in that category. Comments from our testers include: ‘my neck, which tends to be crepey, is smooth and soft – a significant difference’ and ‘I’m raving about this – it actually does more than it says on the jar!’.
Our testers also rated Kimia Perfection Neck & Decollete Serum, £52.85 for 30ml, commenting ‘skin softer and smoother, less lines – definitely an improvement: tram lines on my décolletage were less’ also ‘great texture and smells delicious; fine lines definitely reduced, skin looked glowing and felt smoother; décolletage hugely improved with fine wrinkles no longer visible and skin tighter and firmer; has really improved my confidence – worth the price and lasts a long time’.
We  . . . Maybelline Color Sensational lipsticks, £6.99. There are lots of things we love about these. The creamy, comfy texture. The packaging (which is VERY reminiscent of a lipstick in the Lancôme range!), and the clever ‘grouping’ of shades so that you can take a fast-track to the family that you tend to wear: Red, Pink, Brown, Plum. The colours (all 26 of them) are super-versatile and can be patted on for a bitten-lip stain, or swept on generously straight from the glamorous tube for absolute vampiness. Absolute steals.
