November 22nd, 2009: Waterproof mascaras
Q With the party season coming up I am desperate to find a really stayput waterproof mascara and longlasting lipstick. Any ideas? Or would you recommend having my lashes dyed?
A Your second question first: short answer – No! Jo had a terrible reaction from a reputable salon and Sarah has read too many warnings on hair colours that warn against putting them near your eyes.
We did roadtest a raft of mascaras including waterproof ones for our new book Beauty Bible Beauty Steals. Although it doesn’t flaunt its ‘mackintosh’ credentials, you might do well to try Max Factor Masterpiece Max, which contains ‘heat, abrasion- and water-resistant polymers’, to last all day without smudging or smearing. One tester pronounded: ‘mascara is the one product I cant live without: I have tried lots and this is brilliant because there’s no risk of “tired panda” look!”.’ £9.78 for 7.2 ml, available nationwide.
Other products that did very respectably are Maybelline Define-A-Lash Waterproof Mascara, £7,82 for 6 ml, with testers saying: ‘totally showerproof’ and ‘didn’t run in the rain, shower, weep movie, or when my eyes water, as they do a lot!’. A natch behind was Sleek MakeUP Waterproof Mascara, £3.29. Sleek, which is a brand primarily designed for black and Asian skins (not very relevant with mascara), also gained some great testaments for its ‘fantastic’ waterproofing: comments included ‘stayed put in a weepy movie, fantastic in the pool, and easy-peasy to remove’.
Which brings us on to eye make-up remover, an essential for waterproof mascara. Our testers voted Nivea Visage Extra-Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover Lotion, £3.39 for 125 ml, into top place.

For longlasting lipstick, we usually apply our usual lippies on top of lip balm (let that sink in for a few minutes), then outline and fill in lips with a rosy brown (ie natural-looking) lip pencil, before applying lipstick with a lip brush. Blot that with a tissue, and reapply with brush.
If you want a dedicated longlasting lipstick, our testers rated Max Factor Lipfinity, £10.76, a two step process with a lip ‘paint’ plus a glossy balm-type topcoat; they promise 8 hour colour, and our testers found it nearly made that!.
Happy partying!

Love Me Then Dump Me Make-up Tools Pro Collection, £9.99 for the set of 20 disposable tools. We’re not really fans of disposable anything – but we make an exception when it comes to these nifty little make-up brushes and mascara wands. They’re really designed for professional use, but we think that slipping a pack in a handbag would be brilliant for make-up shopping – especially for those high street stores that don’t have proper tester fixtures. Using these slim-line one-use tools, you can test products in a bug-free way with no risk of infection – which also makes them perfect for ‘make-up swapping’ parties, or when a friend wants to borrow your kit in a beauty S.O.S. For eco-babes like us, there’s even the option of disposables with bamboo handles from sustainable sources.
