June 21st, 2009: Eyeliner Tricks
Q I'm not too bad with eyeshadow but I can't seem to master eyeliner and I really, really want to get to grips with it. Are there any brands you recommend? And tips for application?
A Well, just prepare to play! This is the best fun ever, as there are so many fabulous brands and different options. In the summer, you could go for gorgeous colours (aqua, teal, navy, and bottle green) – perhaps just under your lower lashes as putting them on top as well can look a bit dated (depending on your ‘look’). And you can do that without wearing too much other makeup than tinted moisturiser and mascara, provided your skin is good.
Usually, however, the first thing is to prep if you want your eyeliner (and actually any eye make-up) to last, particularly under the lower lashes. Two thin layers of foundation are a perfect base on the eyelid, and you can powder over the top – a cotton bud will get right up to your lower lashes. Or use a specific base, such as Jemma Kidd Pro I-Perfector, £18, or BeneFit Lemon Aid Corrector Eyelid Primer, £15.50.
The main options are eyeliner pencils and liquid eyeliners that you apply with a brush. Yves Saint Laurent Easy Liner for Eyes, £21, has a built-in brush and precise application is as easy as the label suggests. As well as Easy Black and Easy Brown, you will find the most gorgeous dark petrol/navy blue (Easy Blue), which looks fabulous on any skin tone (except possibly women of colour).
For a thicker smudge-able line, i-smoulder by professional make-up artist range new id Cosmetics is the ticket. The double-ended Smoky Eye Pencil and Shadow comes in six colourways including fabulous greeny-glinty Olive, £16.
At the beauty steal end of the market, find Palladio Retractable Herbal Eye Liner, £4.50, in six colours including Bronzee and Deep Blue. Also GOSH, one of our favourite brands, has two sensational summer beauties –Lemon Grass and Aqua Life Tropical Eye Pencils, currently £3.69 on www.superdrug.com Remember too, that you can dampen your eyeshadow and apply with a paintbrush. GOSH also do a brush-on glitter liner (non-budging), called Extreme Art Glitter Eyeliner, £6.84, which looks amazing brushed over a colour.
Later in the year, you will need to prep your eyelids (as above), then use a good brush to blend a neutral shadow (Bobbi Brown do the best range ever – always worth booking in for a store make-over) and then get going on your eyeliner. We think the best trick is to apply it right up to the lashes, into them if it’s a natural-ish colour, but you can also give yourself a great almond-eye outline… Just play! It’s the best way to find out what suits you. Have a girlfriend round and experiment. You might be enjoyably surprised.

Malibu Secret - there are just some products that instantly conjure up summer when you smell them-and Malibu Secret is one: a really luscious, rich, skin-nourishing, ultra-luxe body treatment, packed with macadamia and cocoa butters, antioxidant green tea and brown algae, plus vitamins A, C and E. We can’t quite describe the fragrance - it just smells like a trip to California, in the nicest possible way. Not surprisingly, Malibu Secret is the red-carpet, bare-skin secret of many a Hollywood body - but on this side of the Atlantic, we find it’s especially good for the days after self-tanning, which tends to dry skin dramatically. £29.95 for 206g from victoriahealth.com
