July 12th, 2009: Hair Protection

I have blonde/light brown hair and worry about how to protect it from the sun's harmful rays. Is there a product I could use every day when I am on holiday that is light and leaves my hair looking fresh (not oily) but protected (like a hair sunscreen)? And which are the best ones? I would like to find something not too expensive but don't know where to look!

A This is SO important.  In fact, Sarah’s colourist (the fab Stephen Little at the John Frieda salon in Aldford Street, Mayfair, London) is endlessly trying to get her to take this seriously – for the sake of her ‘hairstack’!  So the first thing we would say is - A Hat!  Get into the habit of popping on a close-woven titfer every time you go out, even if you’re shimmying to the corner shop for a pint of milk.  They can be incredibly glam, and are certainly essential for bad hair days.

Below you’ll find our suggestions for leave-in products, but first – if you do have a ‘hairstack’, you might be interested in Sarah’s new mane-taming discoveries.  These are by Jason, a pretty natural American brand at pretty acceptable prices, available from www.victoriahealth.comMoisturising Shampoo with plumeria & sea kelp for dry and damaged hair (free of sulphates and parabens), £6.99 for 250ml, followed by Intense Moisture Treatment with Mint & Rose, £7.99 for 150 grams. This claims to ‘instantly hydrate dry, damaged hair’ and in Sarah’s experience does just that. (There is also a Moisturizing Conditioner with plumeria & sea kelp, too, £6.99 for 200 grams.)

John Frieda Collection has a Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Thermal Protection Formula, £5.85 for 50 ml, designed to protect against damage and dryness from heat-styling and UV exposure.  It’s infused with a Thermal Shield Complex (you still with us?) that contains UV filters and promises not only sun protection, but also to restore lustre to hair and help prevent colour from fading.  There’s an Emergency Treatment Leave-In Conditioning Spray, £4.69 for 75 ml, to combat the drying effects of sun, sand and wind, too.  Plus, you can get personalised advice by logging on to www.johnfrieda.co.uk - and sending your details in via the Members Club.

Another favourite brand with our Beauty Bible testers is Korres, who offer Red Vine Year-Round Hair Sun Protection for all hair types, at £10 for 150 ml. This Greek brand, which uses a lot of natural ingredients, promises that the water-resistant UV filters, carried by special nano-particles, are grafted on to the hair, preventing colour fade, with aloe vera and pro-vitamin B5 to protect and hydrate.  You might also consider No7 Hair Protecting Spritz from Boots, which is currently £5.75 for 200ml from stores and also online.

We Love. . .

Purity Skincare from £4.99-8.99. One for wannabe-organic beauties on a budget:  this new range of seven simple, no-nonsense skincare products in recyclable packaging ticks lots of green boxes (it’s organically certified by Ecocert).  Purity ‘stars’ skin-friendly botanicals like sweet almond oil, aloe vera, avocado, oats (to soothe skin) and rosewater (giving a subtle, light rosiness, in place of synthetic fragrances), and it’s exclusive to Superdrug.  A great way to get back to (natural) basics.  (We especially like the Anti-Ageing Serum and Mask, £8.99 for 50ml, which can be left on overnight for a serious skin drink.)
