August 9th, 2009: Good Skin Care
Q I have been using the Good Skin range for red/irritated skin from Superdrug for the past couple of months but keep hearing it's being discontinued. Which cleanser and moisturiser would you recommend I try next for my sensitive, redness-and-spot-prone skin?
A We were pretty gutted to hear that this excellent range - which comes out of Estée Lauder’s ‘beauty innovation bank’ in the States - is disappearing from the shelves of Superdrug, too. But we have a few suggestions for ‘replacements’. (Although you could try stocking up, before Good Skin disappears! Products should be fine for around 18 months, unopened.)
The ranges we suggest are as follows (click on the product names to find them on-line)…

Purity Organic Skincare. This range is new to Superdrug and on-line at www.superdrug.com. (For all we know, it’s taken Good Skin’s slot on the shelf!) It’s a small range, which is non-oily and non-fragranced and designed to be soothing to skin, and it’s one of the most accessibly- priced organic skincare ranges out there. You have a choice of two cleansers - Purity Facial Wash and Purity Conditioning Cleansing Lotion, each £4.99 for 150 ml. There’s a Regenerating Overnight Moisturiser for £7.99 and an everyday Facial Moisturiser, just £5.99 for 50 ml. Or…
Simple. An old standby, Simple has always been the affordable choice for women with sensitive skin, and you can find something for every skin problem within what is now an extremely comprehensive range. The Skincare Starter Kit seems like a good place to start: for a £5 skin-vestment, you’ll receive full sizes of Hydrating Light Moisturiser, Purifying Cleansing Lotion and Soothing Facial Toner. A steal, we’d say.
Avêne. A ‘pharmacy’ brand from France, which specialises in sensitive skin and also rosacea. In particular, we’d suggest Anti-Redness Light Moisturising Emulsion, £12.95 for 40 ml (it has a slight aqua green tinge, to help tone down redness), and Diroséal, £12.95 for 40 ml, a unique localised treatment which targets broken capillaries, containing citrus extract to help reinforce the blood vessels. Find the range at www.garden.co.uk.
Clinique. Their ‘Redness relief’ range is targeted at skins like yours: all of Clinique’s products are ‘non-comedogenic’ (so they don’t block pores, and are therefore less likely to cause spots than some ranges). The range (which is at www.boots.com) includes a Daily Relief Cream for all skintypes with redness, £34 for 50 ml, as well as the instantly soothing Urgent Relief Cream, £24 for 30 ml. However, as you’ll see, both these choices are pricier than the Good Skin range. So, as an alternative…
Aknedoron Cleansing Lotion and Weleda Aknedoron Purifying Lotion, £5.95 each for 50 ml at www.lovelula.com. This gentle daily cleanser and ‘purifying lotion’ (like a toner) feature rebalancing, stimulating oils like sage, thyme, lavender, grapefruit, rosemary, calendula, chamomile… Gentle is the watchword, and that’s what your skin needs.
We . . .
Cosmetics a la Carte Multi Face, £25. These little stackers are fabulous for de-cluttering your kit (or stashing in a gym bag): teensy pots of matte colour which contain a) a three-in-one concealer, eye base and highlighter; b) eyeliner which can be smudged as shadow, and c) a fresh shade for cheeks and lips. Choose from the Pink trio (ivory, navy, soft pink), or Caramel – great for this time of year, with tawny tones of vanilla, taupe and buff. You’re good to go, in a flash. At www.cosmeticsalacarte.com.
