June 7th, 2009: Anti-ageing skin care
Q With the current heat wave – and the prospect of a long hot summer (fingers crossed) – I am desperate to find something to keep my dry skin hydrated and prevent further lines, wrinkles and sun spots! And yes, I am not a spring chicken! What do you suggest?
A Okay we are with you on this one…! (And just consider this: the fabulous Joanna Lumley is 60 plus, so what are any of us worrying about?) Start thinking layers and more layers of moisturiser, night and morning. Plus supplements please. This is what we suggest:
Every night and every morning, apply a facial oil (it will sink in promise), and preferably a serum and moisturiser.
We love the new Anti-Age range by Aromatherapy Associates, which has a range of daily products including two oils -Fine Line Face Oil (£38 for 15 ml) and Intensive Skin Treatment Oil (£36 for 15ml), plus Instant Skin Firming Serum (£38 for 30 ml) and Rich Repair Nourishing Cream (£48 for 48 for 50ml). There is also a sensational Overnight Repair Mask (£42 for 50ml), which plumps out your skin and leaves you looking luscious even if you’ve only had four hours’ sleep (Sarah tested it recently in just these conditions…).
If you are on a budget, try make-up artist Barbara Daly’s tip of massaging in sweet almond oil from any health store. Then apply whatever your moisturiser is once, let it sink in – and apply again.
But you must apply them! The best product in the world won’t work if you gaze at it on the bathroom shelf….
We also think that facial massage is a brilliant way to help skin retain moisture. Hang on for the Beauty Bible guide to Anti-ageing Skincare in YOU on June 28th – it’s an 8 page special, with lots of brilliant tips including Barbara Daly on make-up to take a decade off your face, and a dynamite facial massage – just five minutes in front of the telly at night, and your face will love you for it.
Now: supplements, we think there are three vital ones: omega-3 essential fatty acids (which bump up the fats in your skin), we love Lifetime Vitamins Fish Oil 1000 mg (£17.95 for 90 capsules) hyaluronic acid (which helps your skin retain moisture), we love Lifetime Vitamins Natural Hyaluronic Acid 140 mg (£31.95 for 30 capsules) and GliSODin by Pure PX (£24.46 for 30 capsules, stuffed full of antioxidants, which protect and repair skin cells).
AND OF COURSE! Sorry for the shouty capitals, but you must wear a sunscreen every day. There is so much confusion about the best one that we now just say wear your favourite (with the proviso that if you have sensitive skin, we would avoid chemical barriers and opt for ones with mineral sun filters, eg titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide). Also: wear big sunglasses to shield the skin round your eyes as well your eyeballs, of course, and a big-brimmed closely woven hat – which will protect your hair too.
P.S don’t forget to drink lots of water…. Sip eight large glasses, mostly between meals.
