December 6th, 2009: Make-up Makeover
Q I'm getting a bit out of date with my make-up, so have had a few lessons recently. The expert always wants to use a nasty shade of candy-floss pink eyeshadow, probably because she thinks my eyes are brown, although they're actually dark green. Last time I tried saying "you can do anything but pink" - and her face fell. She insisted pink was 'fresh' - it was hideous! - sickly and cheap-looking. So, no more make-up artists for me. What colour can I use myself to bring out the green-ness of my eyes?
A We think pink eyeshadow is virtually always a mistake, unless you really want to look like a white mouse… Pink belongs on cheeks and lips, not round your eyes.
We can’t help feeling that the expert you‘ve consulted sounds as if she’s not really fit for purpose. We advise going to a good local department store, with plenty of time to look at all the make-up brands and their consultants. Choose a couple of ranges that appeal both looks- and budget-wise, then book in for a make-up make-over. (We love Bobbi Brown, M.A.C. - and Cosmetics a la Carte.)
By the way - when you’ve had your make-over, don’t feel you have to buy any products immediately (unless you really can’t bear to leave without..). Simply say you want to go home and consider exactly what you need – nicely, of course!
We asked one of our favourite make-up artists Jenny Jordan (tel 020 7483 2222, jennyjordan.com) for advice on products and shades to compliment your dark green eyes. Here it is:
1. For a really natural (and foolproof) look, stroke on Eye Define in Antique by Cosmetics a la Carte, £15 for 2.5g, a metallic beigey gold which makes the eyelid look 3-D rather than flat and pale. Build up the colour in layers.
2. This is natural but a little bit more polished: sweep a matte pale neutral colour (eg Eyeshadow in Bone by Bobbi Brown, £14 for 2.55g) over the whole lid; then in the crease line blend in a just darker than skin colour shadow, eg Era, Brulee or Orb by MAC, or Orb Eyeshadow by MAC, £11 for 1.5g, which define your eye shape.
You can then add a forest or khaki green eyeliner (or shadow, applied with a small damp brush) along the root of your top lashes to accentuate the green.
3. If you’re feeling bolder and want to look more sexy, use a soft blue grey matte shadow – with a hint of mauve/purple to really bring out the green. MAC do some great shades, so do Cosmetics a la Carte. Finish with black mascara, or for evenings out try, Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume for False Lash Effect, £21 for 7.5 ml, which looks brilliant on green eyes.

Daly Body Daly Spa, £15. We love ‘Strictly’ (and Tess Daly) and we did a little jig of delight when we discovered her products for, yes, good old M & S. This gift set includes a scrub-a-licious mitt, Daly Body Soak (luscious body wash) and Daly Tone Zone (silky gel body-firmer), both infused with Tess’s lovely sensual signature scent, which is rich in sandalwood and musks) – but what we really adore is the gold bag - the perfect overnight-beauty-kit-for-a-travelling-goddess size. We suggest buying one for a friend, and one for you, because you won’t want to part with it.
