October 4th, 2009:  Winter Skincare

Q I love your books and really value the Tried & Tested surveys - but please can you suggest a basic list of the type of skincare products I need to get me through the winter? I am 42, with reasonable skin although it is on the dry side, and I work in an office. I am on a budget and prefer more natural products where possible.

A What a good question!  And the great thing is that you probably need less than you think.  You’ll find our suggestions below.

Could we also tell you that the updated paperback version of our natural beauty book The Green Beauty Bible, which features lots of new tried & tested products, should be on the shelves now?  The list price is £14.99 but you can buy it direct from Amazon for £9.74 with free delivery now.

So here goes:

Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser by Liz Earle Natural Active SkincareA great cleanser: the highest scoring product ever in our Beauty Bible consumer trials is Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser by Liz Earle Natural Active Skincare, great value at £12.50 for 100 ml pump dispenser, with two muslin cloths.  For a ‘supersteal’ basic, you couldn’t do better than no-nonsense Boots Essentials Cucumber Cleansing Lotion, (available in stores only, not online) which doubles as a toner, just £1.49. NB Cleanse & Polish lifts mascara off, but you may need an eye make-up remover with the Cucumber Cleansing Lotion.

Day moisturiser:  Neal’s Yard Remedies Rose & Mallow Moisturiser,  £17.80 for 50g, scored highly in our latest round of testing.  This all natural product, with soothing marshmallow, anti-aging rose and a vitamin-rich blend of carrot and almond, can also be used at night for normal to dry skins.  One tester said: ‘so many people have complimented me that my skin looks rejuvenated’.

Night cream:  costing just £9.95, Weleda Wild Rose Night Cream ticks both the ‘green’ and ‘budget’ boxes.  Again based on fragrant, luxurious, age-defying rose, this gained rave reviews from testers, who said ‘skin was soft, smooth and looked good despite me being worn out’ and ‘skin much brighter, more radiant and revitalised, and pores less noticeable’

Eye cream: eye creams can cost an arm and a leg, so we were delighted to find that
A’kin Ginkgo & Chamomile Revitalising Eye Night Cream£17.99 from an accessibly-priced Australian range (A’kin means ‘being similar to the way the skin behaves naturally’) did fantastically well for our testers, with comments such as ‘shadows round eyes less prominent, helped reduce dark circles’ and ‘definite reduction in puffiness and fine lines smoothed’.

Yes To Carrots C Is Smooth Body Moisturizing Lotion

Hand and body cream:  we’re big fans of the Yes to Carrots range, from a dottily named American brand, which actually doesn’t smell of organic carrots – or pumpkin, sweet potato and melon, which also appear in a rich lotion called –wait for it! – Yes To Carrots C Is Smooth Body Moisturizing Lotion, a true beauty steal at £5.49.  Testers loved it, saying: ‘light fresh fragrance and silky lotion; excellent packaging, gave softer skin and areas of dryness improved’.

We Love. . . Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant Lip Colour, £13.50.  Just in time for the chapped-lip season:  a gorgeous gloss which offers lip-conditioning benefits (that’s thanks to shea and cocoa butter), feels gorgeous (not at all sticky) – and has age-defying powers, too.  Vitamin C and açai berry are potent antioxidants, which shield skin and help protect future damage to this so-fragile zone.  Love the shades, too – especially Goodness Grapecious and Rhubarbie, which tap into this season’s berry trend.
